Thanks to Dan from the Redpower forum for these pictures. He lives in southern Iowa but his job takes him to central Kansas where he ran across this old 55 JD sitting by the road.

Its not a bad looking old combine.

There are earlier ones than this. Dad owned one that didn't have the folding unloading auger and the gas tank was on the left rear instead of on the right under the engine access ladder. Also it didn't have the auger on the clean grain output to the hopper. Some refer to the hopper as the grain tank. We always called it the hopper. I think the first 55s were available in 1947. Dad's had serial number 55-3775 and it sold at his farm retirement auction in 1969. I've tried to find an operator's manual for that old of 55, but haven't had any success. JD publications catalog info doesn't even list them back to that serial number.

Would be a 1952 through about 1955 model. In 1952 after serial # 17838 JD moved the var spd and header hydraulic controls, along with the gauges to a console in the right front part of the operator's station.

Nice picture. Brings back fond memories of when I used to operate Dad's back in Saskatchewan when I was a 12 year old kid...
