Restoring an old swather.

Hello, I'm sitting here while the ice has everything covered and thought I would get on here and pick some brains. I love looking at all the old combines on here and I plan on getting one soon for hay seed, but what I would really like to have and fix up is a old swather.Something to use on about 50 acres a year. However, around here (East Central Missouri)everything is a pull type Mower/Conditioner and a Swather is pretty well non-existant. Let me ask some of you experts out there. What is the difference between a SP Swather and a SP Windrower? Are these the same thing? If not, what is the difference? Also, what would be a good old machine to restore and run that wouldn't be next to impossible to get parts for. I have seen one or two old Owatanna's sitting in some fence rows , but would have no idea where to get parts. Once in a while you will see an old John Deere too. I just think it would be neat to have one. Thanks for listening.

Scott

OMC's parts are a bit on the expensive side but the really old one's are neat. Versatile 400's are a good little swather if they are in decent shape. I run one every summer (both have draper heads with a conditioner). They have a Ford industrial in them and Case can get most of the parts still at a reasonable price.

If you go back to the Jan 4 posts here you will find where 1206 had a lead on an Oliver SP swather not far from him. Might be something you were looking for even if it is clear across the state. In Kansas when I was growing up most everyone had a SP swather with a crimper. There was one in the community that had a draper and no crimper. When I ran the combine picking up a windrow I preferred that be the swather they used. It just fed in the combine better.

Mostly a difference in terminology. They both cut a crop and leave it in a windrow. However, some machines are made specifically for cutting hay, rather than hay and small grain. They would have an auger header instead of a draper (rubber or canvas) header. Some have hay conditioner rolls that can be removed for cutting grain. Many JD 800s made- still get parts for them. Still the planetary drive like the Owatonna had. Later machines are hydro. Owatonna is out of business- I wouldn't be surprised if they invented SP swathers. They go back to the 50s, made in Owatonna, MN.
