Heres how they hauled SP combines in the old days on the harvest run. They hung the rear wheels off the truck and put the header over ther cab.No wonder the Masseys were so popular as they were low to the ground and easier to haul.DOT would sure frown on that today.

At over 13 ft how could you haul a 123 IH or other tall combines?

Looks like that truck wopuld be pretty light on the front end! What protected the underside of the combine's "tender parts" from being smashed?

The neighbor that my Dad went on the harvest run with used 82 Masseys before we started with him. He always hauled the Masseys this way, I remember seeing them. One time he got my Dad to drive one home from North Dakota. My Dad said it was quite a trip, especially across bridges with tall sides. The 82 Masseys were low profile so height wasn't a problem but when my Dad started they switched to CII Gleaners with cabs and loaded them on the trucks. The were around 14 foot tall and they had several good stories.

A fellow that made the harvest run from Oklahoma back to his home state of Minnesota in the 1950"s with a new Chevrolet truck and a Super 27 combine told me once that they always waited to go south until a couple of 123 IHC"s had already gone. They then new that any low hanging REA lines had been torn down already. Of course that was before Interstate highways.

Back in the late 1960's I was working part time at the MM dealer along hiway 71 just north of Milo,MO.

One morning we heard a loud bang and the power went out.The JD dealer from Lamar,MO was hauling a tall JD combine on a tilt bed and caught every wire running across the hiway. It damaged some cars in the parking lot.If someone had been standing there they could have been killed. It closed the hiway for awhile and they got a fine for being over height.
