Old Massey in downtown Alton in reply to Kirk in kansas,, 01-08-2007 11:35:04
Kirk, interesting you should mention Alton. I remember seeing somethin rather unusual over there, about 20-23 years ago. It was a masey-Harris combine inside a building. Not a barn or shed, but inside a old store-front-type building. It was way too dark to get any details as to any name or address on the building. I DO remember clearly, the town was alton and I was on my way to yet another location via Greyhound when I passed through.

I figured maybe you would either remember that combine or even know something about it. I found it odd that such an oldie just sat there, inside, as if a car on a showroom floor.

Hi Nut,s
I was thinking about what you were saying about that old massey in a store front,
It must have been awhile ago cause there isnt anything like that now , or hasnt been for at least 4,or 5 yrs here in town,
I dont know who owned it, but that would be cool to see if you could find another one like that in an old store or something like that,

Well, Kirk, that"s too bad. I can't even begin to remember which end of town it was on, but I figured you would either know something about that, or be able to at least ask around. I'm sure some of the old timers will remember that combine, too.

By the way, is Kelly Harlan's store still there, in Alton?

Hi 1206,
Yea there,s a few around here scattered in different place,s, I see a few old gleaner,s and an occasional IH, and a few JD,s too,
this area must have been big on JD and gleaner, and IH cause that,s all i really see around here unless i really go scouting around in other place,s,and then Ill se different thing,s like old mc cormic,s or even an oliver and older massey 27sp,s too that i like too,
there,s a massey,open platform maybe a 26,or 27 on the way to hay,s from plainville which I like too,
It,s on the east side of road in a person,s yard next to an oliver with cab on it,
You can see it when your going south to Hay,s It,s about 5 mile,s from there,
And there,s a 55 JD up the block from me with a cab on it,Dont know when it was last run, But it,s at the house where I got the Case 2670 at,
K,C,
Ive been tempted to go and look at that 55 for a few week,s,
It look,s in good cond, albeit a little faded,
cause of sitting outside for a while,
But that Minnie SP like my Grandad had still take,s the cake for me though,
Kirk,

Well Kirk, if you're interested in an MM SP, I've got one for you but you're in for some serious hauling. It's at Wichita, it's in operating condition, and I think the price is reasonable. If it doesn't suit Kirk's situation, maybe Blaine would be interested in it.

TC, is there any pic,s of it?
wichita is about 240 Miles from me,
and I would need a trailer like custom cutter,s use with lower runner,s on the side,s,
Otherwise, It,s not a problem,
i think Im gonna go ahead and kep that w-6 i have, and just redo it as good as i can,
i got the e mail,s from alot of guy,s out there that told me to not get this 970 Case for 7 grand, it being WAY TOO MUCH FOR THAT TRACTOR!
So I will look some more,
and Ill stay away from the powershift one,s cause ive heard they could be a bad thing down the road,

TC,you have mail.Do you have any pictures?

The bad thing about the model S MM SP combines is that they are just about impossible to haul as the drive wheels are a mile wide!
One has to hang off a 102" wide trailer.

Hi 1206,
WOW, i didnt know that hummmm,
pretty wide,
this guy called me from somewhere in kansas,
and said he had a MM S type sp , and he wasnt sure it was the one i wanted,
But he said it had the round grain tank, and the straight up steering wheel like they had, but he said that irt had a wisconsin engine in it down on the lower right side, along with the angled dust collector,,I thought the engine was beside the driver, maybe im wrong?
But i dont think so,
He was saying that there,s only one back wheel and it was offset,
But he knew that these thing,s had the spoked back wheel,s close together,
So Ill wait to see if he got the pic,s of that one he,s telling me about,

I was wanting to copy some pic,s of this one of f of an old photo book, and then after i get them into the file in my PC,
then, I wanted to offload them onto this combine file in this webpage,
But Im still trying to figure out how to do it, saw an old MH 90 SPL dwn the road from me at this older farmer,s yard,
It was all there except for the engine was out of it, and up in his shed, (I dont know why,
maybe it got hot, and seized,I dont know)
The front wheel,s were off of it, and they were up against a tree up this path up from the combine,
Combine was all there except you know, rusty, but the decal,s were still there, and the dust collector was in good shape, and not bent up,
i kinda like the Massey SP,too, as well as the Mc cormick one,s too,
K,C,
