Well,I'm hoping to add this 123 IH SP to the collection. Its all original except for the lowered grain bin.It still even has the header with the canvas feeding the feeder chain.123 IH's are next to impossible to find even in Kansas.

It just dawned on me.Isnt that a 1959 Ford Skyliner Retractable Hardtop behind the combine?Maybe I'd better be getting it too!!I once owned a 1957 Retractable.

This combine is in the middle of nowhere. We plowed deep mud for a mile in a 4WD Dodge pickup where the front hubs werent working!!We about got stuck twice and it was 2 miles to the nearest farm.In western Kansas the unpaved roads are all sand and are terribly muddy after a big rain which they were having while I was there..

I had to walk nearly half a mile across a pature in the rain and wind to look at this one.My contact Gerald that found me this is a super nice guy in his mid 70's and is still going strong.

See the big combine in the back ground.Any guesses what it is?
I'll post a picture later to let you know!

I just showed my dad a picture of the 123 and he said he knows where one that looks like that is so I will have to check it out if it ever quits snowing and blowing.

When I called and bought the 123 IH last night the owner told me everything there is for sale as they want to clean the place up.If thats a Retractable Hardtop I'm going to put a bid on it.I need to see if it has a drive train. The weather was so bad I didnt pay any attention to the 59 Ford.

I'll bet there are some old turtle back 123,125,127,and 141 IH's up your way.

That could be a retractable. Does the 123 have the chain type final drives

Yep,the old 123's had the chain drive.I'm almost sure thats a Retractable as it looks like the trunk opens from the front for the top to fold in to.I cant believe that I didnt look it over some since I used to own a 1957.

Thanks for the great pictures, I am working on getting all these pictures on a disk so I will have them to help in a restoration of a 123, with my son's help it is getting done.I think I will be able to get the one I worked with.I have found another guy who worked with this combine for 2 yrs before I did, He just inherited a small farm from his father and would like to help. Small shop to store it in with power, so we can do it there.I have found other people who remember this harvester working in this county, right at the begining of the war. So may be able to save a piece of Polk County Oregon's history. Not so interested in having an operating example right now but try to get the engine & drive train working and get as much metal saved as I can for now.I have done a lot of looking here & talking with people to find more 123's & have only found 1 shedded & 1 in the weather. Shedded one is getting wet and rusting as roof is bad & 50 miles away, but won't sell. Other is in worse shape than the one here & 60 miles away. Made me realize it won't get any better, so best save what I can now.I appreciate everything you are doing to save these great machines of our past and getting people to realize it is important some are saved for the future.

jwal10, I'm glad that you have decided to try and save that old 123 IH out your way.Do you have any pictures for us?The rusted out sheet metal can all be fabricated.I guess that 123 IH located in the UK was a rusted out mess when the owner started on it.It looks like new now.

Its too bad they wont sell that shedded one you found.123 IH's are very scarce and hard to find.I know of a parts 123 in central Kansas for $100 and when I get back out to western Kansas I have (2) parts 123's to go look at.I'm hoping that one has a gravity dump grain bin.

I noticed the '59 Ford, but didn't notice that it is a Skyliner. For the younger set- that means that the hardtop roof folded down into the trunk.

Rear View Of The 123 IH in reply to 1206SWMO, 12-30-2006 07:39:36
third party image

It still has the original tricycle rear end which is a plus.It also has the original dual drive wheels.Very few 123's still have both of these as most had a wide rear added and single big drive tires.

A few bullets have found the 123.It was hard taking pictures in the rain and wind.

Its sat there forever but isnt totally rusted away. The reel is pretty well gone.

Shedded 123 IH's are few and far between but I have heard there are (3) somewhere in SW Kansas but no ones talking!

I let my neighbor ladies always shedded 123 get away several years ago which I will always regret!

More questions, Do you know what engine was used? What else it was used in? The fuel tank is a lot more square on this one.Mine is much more oval, did it have to do with sacker model? Was dual on right an option or standard? both have it, but old pictures don't have it. I have been back out to look at this one here several more times & it isn't as bad as originally thought, 3 tires are still up. The frame looked as if it was into the dirt but after getting blackberry vines cut out [a 3 hour job] all that rubbish was just leaves and is still dry under there after all the rain we have had this year. I'm taking lots of pictures but don't have much extra time or any way to post here.I have talked to several family members & it looks like they will give us everthing as they would like it kept around. Most of the family didn't know it was even there. Trying to get anything known, history, pictures, stories. Neat to hear back from old farmers, neighbors, any one who remembers. Any way, we have it jacked up, put air in tires, 1 rear will need new tube and will remove duals & put 1 on other side to move. Thanks for all the help.

I'll bet the gas tank was different on the bagger model 123.

I think duals were standard on the engine side because of all the weight but were optional on the right side. The sales lit always shows singles on the right side.

As I mentioned its a 6 cyl IH truck engine from the 1940's.

If you can email me pictures I'll post them for you.

Good luck with the 123.

Got The 123 Bought Last Night! in reply to jwal10, 12-31-2006 08:06:55
jwal10,I made a phone call to Kansas last night and bought the 123 IH SP for a very reasonable price. The owner was very nice and friendly. He was without power due to ice but was sure happy for the 3-4" of much needed rain.

I'm getting ready for church so will get back to you this afternoon or eve on your questions. You need original 123 sales lit. Some just sold recently on ebay.

It has a flathead 233 cube 6 cyl IH truck engine in it.Dads sure did sound good.
