I talked to you on the bashing board on the early Gleaner A I have. I have decieded to keep it and got it running again the thursday before Christmas. I was reading some of your old posts on here and see you call the engine on then flat head fords. I always thought the early A's had hercules flat head 6's. The one I have has hercules wrote on the exaust manifold. were hercules made by ford? just wondering? early 55 john deere's also used the same engine. EMI 6030

Hi EMI6030, The very early model A & R Gleaners had the Ford engine.I had the info wrote down somewhere but cant find it.From memory here it is.If I'm wrong someone please correct me.Thanks.I didnt know all of this until a couple of years ago.

1951-52 had the 226 Ford flathead 6
1953-57 had the QXLD 236 Hercules flathead 6
1958 and up had the 230 Buda OHV 6

Joe Graunke has a real early Ford powered one.He promised us a picture of it.Brian A from MO says his Dad has one too.I also know of one 40 miles from me that is still in use.Austins at Butler,MO have a rough early A Ford too and I put a picture of it on here.

I have original sales literature for the Hercules and Buda powered A's but not for the Ford powered ones. The Ford one would be hard to find.

I dont think that Ford and Hercules had any connection?I'm glad to hear that you are going to keep the A and got it running.

1206 SWMO The one I have is a 1957. It is a second owner combine and has been in the family since 1960. Also my dad was at the dealership that sold it new when the were preping it for delivery. The man who bought it was giving the dealer heck as it was sitting outside there and he had shed room at his place for his new combine to sit inside. Three years later he decieded to quit farming and my Grandpa and Dad went to look at it. they bought it to replace a 76(I think)IH pull type. The last we used it was in 1991 thrashing barely. It got parked in the barn on a rented farm and sat there since. The land owner pasted away and his daughter is running things different. So we had to get it outthis fall along with our 1962 Gleaner A. Last Wednesday I started playing around with the older one (I was real surprised that both engines were free). Gave a shot of oil in each plug hole, added gas, got the gas pump working, cleaned the carb twice, and cleaned up the points and plugs. And by Thursday afternoon I had it running. Everything works yet, several belts need replacing and the variable speed doesn't work as it should. I am hoping to combine oats with it next summer. How hard is it to post pictures on here as I'd like to show you it. I still need to find a home for the 1962 A as I just don't room to keep it inside. I have a late 60's JD 96 pull type, a 1969 JD 95EB and a 1977 JD 6600 To store all ready I use the 95 and 6600. good luck in all your combine quests and I'm glad I found this forum. Interesting reading.. EMI6030

Sounds like you have a nice collection of old combines. We are glad that you found us here.I'll bet that old flathead Hercules 6 sounds pretty good in the 57 A Gleaner.

I just came in from running the old A. Yes it sure does purr nice, just as nice as the 404 in the 6600. I have never had a engine that sat so long come back to life so nice as that hercules did. I also forgot to mention I have a restored Allis Chalmers Rumley 22x36 Threshing Machine. This in one that must have been just built when the merger took place because it was painted orange by hand over the Rumley green on all the angle iron and cast parts. A guy in the UP of Michigan gave it to my dad in 1987. How is your 6030 JD running? A list of all the combines you have would be nice also. EMI6030
