Ford 555 Backhoe. Need specific advice on removing the kingpin. The locking pin (bolt) has been removed. It is 2 wheel drive. What is the best way to remove the kingpin itself from the axle. She is tight. Have left a jack under the pin with the weight of the machine on it to no avail. Tried sledge, no luck. Can anyone recommend the best way to get it out. Its on the right side. Think that it must be removed from the top side. Help , I am stuck (along with the kingpin) tanks

While I've never worked on your particular application I've pulled a million kingpins and have never, ever heard of, or even tried to yank one out the top.

The key is to get it moving. You are dealing with lots of years of rust on this thing. It has been rusting up since the day it was built.

Get that axle absolutely red/white hot and give 'er a smack with that heavy sledge. It'll come.

Don't heat the pin, just the axle. You don't want to "mushroom" the pin either, so when you decide it is time to hit, smack it a good one.

Once it moves, you've got it made and the new one will drop right back in there like there was never even a problem; plumb cold too. :>)

If you've got the lockbolt out, take a big heater on your torch and heat that axle red hot. It's gotta be hot, I mean really, really hot.

Then with a big drift and a big hammer, beat the pin out of there in a hurry.

Only way I know of movin' those jokers.

Allan,
Well , sounds like you know what it takes to get'm out, so eye'll give it a try. Guess the heat that I tryed (twice) was not enough. Wondered what the heck it would take. Can you confirm that the pin needs to go out the top and not the bottom. I mean, you gotta' beat it from the bottom up? Preciate' your response. yellerc@

I would drive it down with a BFH and maybe some heat unless it has a one piece cast axle

Did you mean to post this next door, on the 'crawler' board? I did a lot of rebuild on my 4500TLB last year, but not anything about the kingpins, so can't help you there. Maybe a parts man can tell you if they are tapered, but I wouldn't exp[ect them to be since they often need to be reamed in.
