Buying Shedded Combines-Letting Them Sit Outside?

Is it wrong to buy shedded combines and let them sit outside?I can buy a shedded 82 MH combine for scrap price but it will have to sit outside later on this year after I buy some older-rarer combines that need to be under a roof..The 82 will be junked next Spring if I dont buy it.

It costs a small fortune to build a combine shed even if you do it yourself.40-45" of rain per year quickly takes a toll on unshedded combines.Living in the rust belt has its disadvantages.

Whats your opinion?

Good news the 82 is short. So you can get it under a carport. Down here they sell carports installed for 795.00.

Northern tool sells some tents that are sized up to 18X40X11. Tractor supply also sells the thing. Both priced about the same.
A 18x30X11 sells for about 299.00 plus about 120.00 shippping.

I have move a Case 700 to Houston to my back yard and I going with the car port idea and I'll raise it up on blocks to get the height I'll need than I will use traps on the sides.

Another idea is just weld pipes stucking up around 4 corners of the combine and then build a tiny roof that the main body of the combine sets under. This way you get shade while you run the field and some protection from the weather.

I was wondering if there is a product out there, reasonably priced that could be sprayed on the combine. Something like a spray on wax, or rainx for windshields. Like an out door armor all. Don't know right off hand of anything. Anybody have any ideas?
If you don't get the combine, then what? The least a guy can do is make an attempt at saving the piece of equipment.
Maybe one of us will win the lottery.
Yea that's the ticket!!!!! !! If I win the lottery I'll build everybody on this forrum a new
100 x 200 shed. Anybody else in????? ??

Take care Farmer

I use Mop and Glow for kitchen floors on my Water Tender Tank to help protect it. My paint takes a beating with brush draging down the sides and dust and dirt stick real good to it. So I used Mop and Glow on it once and the dirt and dust washes off easy and water beads up. Easy to apply I just use a spray bottle and wipe it down with a sponge then let it dry. If you did not care about how thick it was or drips then just spray it on. A pressure washer with a detergent cleaner will remove it later for painting. Plus it makes the red paint nice and shinny! You can use a pump up plactic sprayer and put 2 coats on letting it dry between them. Mark H.

i have had to let mine sit outside but and thinking of making a cattle tromp shed type of machine storage with the mono sloping roof.thinking about making it bout 40' wide by 18' tall in front and slope down to 14' at back so i can have part a drive thru for tall equipment and about 32 ' deep. was wondering if 6x6 s would be able to handle the load with 18' wide doors.i hate my stuff sitting outside and even hoops have jumped up in price. if i dont get this done this year i am thinking about getting one of those 12x26 ' tent type covers.that are like car ports. since i am about a hundred miles from my farm and it's hard to lkeep tarps on most equipment since the bolts and such tend to tear

Go to TSC and buy a nice big tarp and have at it. Get a bunch of tarp straps and cover the whole thing right over top of it. Should be able to do the whole thing for about $75.00. Not real pretty but better than nothing.

Guess I am lucky we get a few inches of rain a year and the winters are real dry snow. Seems old iron lasts a long time outside except for fading of the paint by the sun. Hard to decide to spend 4,000.00 to cover a 500.00 combine and not run out of money fast to restore them. I built a $30,000.00 barn 48X60 that would hold around 4 of them but I need it for hay and the animals. If my Daughter ever leaves home then it is mine for my projects. Right now she is using it to take care of 35 cows year round. The cows have it better then I do for working on things!! My shop is 18X28 and hard to get things in. Mark H.

During nasty weather I would take 2x6s and attach them to the equipment outside and put tarps on them. That way it holds them off the metal and you can still do something to them during the winter with the snow off them. We have high winds all the time here so every thing needs tied down good. Well I would try and get it just to save it from going to China. Is there anyone that has an empty shed that you could rent?

I have to admit that it saddens me to see previously well taken care of equipment sitting outside, at least in our climate (about the same as yours). Now if it prevents scrapping then that's another deal but I bought a plow from a fellow in IN that had much very nice old equipment and tractors sitting not only outside but in a grove and rusting fast, he said "have to buy it while there is some to buy and sheds wil have to come later" You all have seen my Gleaner S pics on here. Was shedded it's whole life but it sat out one spring and summer while I worked on several problems at my shop and it suffered for it. I tried tarps but that was worse than sitting under the stars. My problem is my shed space is not on the same property as power and tools. I guess given your position I'd save the 82 and let people know it can be bought or maybe try to rent some shed space?

Build more sheds! An alternative would be to connect several tarps and put them over the combines as a temporary cover. Let me know if this works for you.

I just cant afford any more sheds at the present time.

We get way too much wind to keep a tarp on anything.I hate to see shedded combines junked but leaving combines out doors just gives them a slow death.

I've tried to find homes for old shedded combines on here but no one ever responds.I know of an always shedded 60 MH SP,60 MH PT,and a 2890 MM that were taken out of sheds a year ago.At least the owners werent going to junk them.

Hi 1206,
It,s kirk,
Im the same waqy as you brother, i cant stand to have thing,s sitting out in the weather either, as i have a 51 W-6 sitting on a big mobile home cement slab about 42X16,
So I know what you mean in REAL TERM,S,
My Case 2670 is sitting on the grass on the south side of my lot next to the sidewalk,
on the south side of my House in Alton,
I like the sound of the IH diesel tractor,s too, as they kinda sound like a Roll,s Royce Merlin
Aircraft engine when their revved up,
Kinda low and raspy at the same time,
I , like you have alot of dream,s and Idea,s, But i too have to build a shed, or borrow another person,s till i get one myself,
Kirk,

Hoop buildings are OK but the bigger they are the harder the wind is on them. My 18x32x16 high realy is getting hamerd in our normal 40+ mph winds. We had 65 MPH winds a while back and I was wondering how many more of those it could take before it was damaged and the cover was torn off. If it ever happens it will have metal put on it instead of a tarp. The frame is strong enought to support it being made out of 2 3/4" 12ga steel tube. Mark H.

I would try to put one where there is a windbreak such as trees or buildings or not even try. They don't do big winds.
