If you didn't have much to spend and wanted a small older combine for corn...what would you get? Seems Gleaner's are very popular...so which one for 50 acres or less of corn? Needs to be easy repaired, reliable and user friendly...as I have never owned a combine. I looked at a K and it seemed dirt simple. Obviously, I'd like a cab...not wanting an antique!

I'd never go back to a gas combine, although you can get a gasser cheaper. My old 985 NH (Ford 300 6-cyl.) was OK on gas and handled a 4/wide easily, but now I have a NH 1400 diesel/hydro. (same size, but newer) Right at 1 gallon per ACRE in oats, about 1 1/2 gallons per acre in corn, running a 6/30 head. Never seemed to be much difference to me in maintainance or repair difficulty between the NH's, Gleaner, and Oliver that I've owned.

You need to consider your planter size. 2-4-6 rows? K would certainly be fine for 50 acres- takes either a 2row wide head or 3row 30 inch. F will take a 4row wide, 3 row narrow.

My planter is an old JD 494...but a 2 row combine would do me fine. Of course, if a 4 row unit could be had for the same money, then it'd be hard to pass up. What kind of money we talking for a serviceable machine in good order?

You can find a good machine, either model, for $1500 or less. Orange corn head is older, 3-$500. Black head is newer ('A' series)- either side of $1000 for a 4 row. If you go with an F and 4 row, in wet ground you can run duals behind the head. Can't do that with a K. I have an F2 with 28x26 rubber behind a 430 head- carries in mud almost as good as duals. Used to have an F with 23x26 rubber- dualed that with 16.9x28 from my D17- tire heights are the same and made a simple step-down band to fit the 26 inch rim.

the gleaners are easy to get parts for. can't say i have used one personally though. i would think either a gleaner or a case 660 would fit your needs. the case is a little harder to get parts for but i think they are very user friendly and easy to work on. if you're looking at a gleaner you probally don't need anything larger that a model k. Also the gas combines are cheaper to buy.
