Guys,we'd better start saving these early SP combines as there may not be much over 100 of each of these left yet that are in restorable condition.More and more are getting junked every year. The bigger share of old combines are still sitting on farms and arent in collectors hands.

I have some friends that run a tractor-combine salvage yard and they buy alot out in Kansas. They ran in to a junker out there last summer that said hes 75 farms behind on cleaning up everything on them.Thats an area that not that many years ago had tons of 1940s-50's model SP combines. They were sitting everywhere.

Heres my list of combines that possibly are down to 100 or less decent ones in existence.I'm not counting parts combines.

T Gleaner-a one year production combine where I find more without engines than ones that have an engine. They are a high demand combine. What will the dandy one in Illinois bring?

Early A Gleaner with flathead Ford 6 engine-very few seem to be left.I'm lucky to know where ones at but he still uses it!

100 Allis SP-Probably some over 100 left yet but it seems to be a real high demand combine. The AC collectors are very active.

Massey-Harris 20-Deffinitely well less than 100 are left as not that many were built. Most are probably already in collectors hands.I would consider them the most desirable and most valuable of any SP built.

Massey-Harris 21 with Canvas platform-they are hard to find!

Massey Harris Clipper SP-They seem to be in very short supply and several are wanting me to find them one. Most were junked years ago as they werent all that great.

Oliver 33-The 1st Oliver SP and and few seemed to survive.

SP-9,SP-12,120,150 Case SP combines-Looks to me like not all that many have survived as they probably werent the greatest combine ever built.

IHC 123-125-127-most of the old turtle back IH's seem to have been junked years ago.Finding a restorable one is very hard to do.Looks like I have one bought out in Kansas for $100 but its missing the original gravity dump grain bin.Ouch!!!!

Moel S MM-You are going to look long and hard to find one thats restorable. They werent that great of a combine and lots bit the dust 30 years ago.

Cockshutt-CO-OP 110-112-115-132-137-Again they arent real plentiful except up in Canada.

Ford 611-a low production combine thats hard to find.

There seems to be quite a few early MH (21-A ,Super 27's-etc)
and JD SP (45-55) combines left so dont have them on the list.

If only 100 or each of the above combines are still left yet most wont be in high demand until we get about 110 combine collectors each wanting one.Thats when the price will go up.Right now lots of combines can still be had for free or junk price.

Lets hear some comments. If you disagree say so and state why..I'm trying to get some discussion going on here.

I have a Case combine SP1235371093,engine serial#389604, It has been sitting out side here in Arizona for years, I"m not shur how many I just bought the property, I checked the serial # here on the net and it looks like the 7 number serial # numder puts it as a 1949 model year, does that sound right to you. I have not decided if this is restorable our good for parts yet,it does have a few parts lying around it on the ground. Ray

If you want to talk about a rare SP combine, consider the Harris from I think California. Neighbor has one sitting in the fence row. Huge machine for its day.

 1972 Model L Gleaner in reply to 1206SWMO, 12-15-2006 11:05:48
Very rare. This is one of more modern combines, but that was also 35 years ago! The original Model L Gleaners were frought with many, many weaknesses and failures. Some of the bigger and stronger Gleaner dealers even saw to the deliberate and strategic "culling" of as many of them as possible, for the sake of keeping up their business and ethics standards.

A few 1972 L's lived through this, proving themselves worthy to keep on the farm. However, age and wear have taken even further toll, pushing these last survivors further to the edge of total extinction.

1972 was the first year of the Model L. The L was the first combine to usher in the age of electromagnetic controls, push buttons, new ergonomic standards and more.

I know of 3 Oliver 33s within a 10 min drive of my house. Plus I have seen a few restored ones in the Oliver mag, so I would guess there are more out there. The IH 123 could be rare but not the 125-7. I know one place were there are 3 of them and I can think of at least 3 more around here. I know of 3 Cockshutt 112s. I've seen at least 3 MM S combines and I'm pretty sure I can bring one of them home right now if I go get it. I think you would find more of these combines if you went around and starting looking at each and every farm although I know it would be almost impossible to do that in a country our size.

5020 Guy, Its going to be up to you guys in wheat country to save the remaining restorable combines that are sitting outside because thats where they must all be at.An area from the Texas-OK panhandle on north and west to the Dakotas and Montana seems to be the prime area for finding them.SP combines came in to your area much earlier than they did here do your farm size.SP combines were far and few between here until the early 60's.

The rust belt starts in eastern Kansas and goes clear to the east coast.Any 1940's-50's combine that has sat out for 30-40 years in this vast area is a rusted out hulk and isnt even restorable.Remember that rusted out 21-A Massey I showed on here.Thats what we have to deal with here.I need to get down to my neighbors and take a picture of his 33 Oliver thats sat out for 40 years. Its sad.Quite a few of the model 35-40 Oliver combines seem to have survived.

40-50 year old barn kept combines are few and far between in this area and on east. From the pictures I've seen you post on here, your combines that have sat out look better than the always shedded ones around here.

I've been to the west coast 3 times in the past 11 years and every time we go I see less and less old combines sitting around.Every year I get over a huge area of Oklahoma,Nebraska,Kansas, and MO driving the back roads and dont find much old stuff. We can still find 60's and 70's stuff but nothing much older thats worth having.

I'm afraid that if I lived in Montana I'd have 160 acres full of old SP combines.(grin)Grab me a few pictures in your travels so I can add them to my combine photo album. Thanks,I always enjoy your comments and pictures.

By the way I like your Big Bud that you just bought.

 M-H 70 and M-F 205 in reply to 1206SWMO, 12-15-2006 11:05:48
Very rare. The Model 70 was only made in 1953 and just under 1,500 were actually built.
The 205 is from the late 1960's and less than 2,000 built.

Yes i know of alot of "junkers" out my way, just about all you have in your list I have seen out here but in bad to worse shape.
As you said some of those #'s and colors were not worth the steel they were made of, so they are just plain JUNK!

On MM's I should have added the 168 and 570 Customatic-try finding one of them and your work will be cut out!

I knew where those were-just outside of Newton, KS in 1987. I wonder if they are stil there. Yes, they are both rarer than Andean condors!
