White 8800 combine, 6 row narrow corn head, 20' bean head, Melroe pickup, $3000.

That is the ad, how old would this model be? Were they a good combine? What should I look for on it that could be bad or is cominly wrong with them.

I am expanding into the crop game next year and have picked up a few more acres with the potential for 100+ next spring. So I am watching ads for deals and thought this sounded like a pretty decent package for the price. I will have access to a 4400 JD to use, but if a good deal comes along I may as well grab . I do have some one that I could do custom work for on thier small grains and beans so there would be some extra cash flow towards justifying the purchase

the only comparison between a 8800,915,7700is the era they were built 8800 52",915 48", 7700 55",new holland 1500 50",massey 750 50" massey 760 60",co op 951 50",claass matador 50". In the 70's these were serious threshing combines now they are deemed small

I ran White combines and worked at a dealer for quite awhile. They are good machines easy to work on, (except beater bearings are a real pain to replace) the cabs are somewhat noisy, but they didn't have the drive plate and motor shaft problems of the later and much quieter 8900 with the rubber mounted cab and engine. Parts can be ordered thru Agco and they are plentiful in salvage yards(at least around here they are).If you don't have a ton of acres and like to do your own repairs they are a great machine.

They were a good combine in their day. They were built in the mid to late 1970's. Were a continuation (improvement?) of the Oliver 7800. Were replaced in 1979 or 1980 by the 8900. Came with either a 400 cubic inch gas V-8 engine or 354 Perkins 6 cylinder diesel. I think it was turbocharged. The heads are good sizes for that machine. It was White's big combine until they come out with the 9700 rotor machine in 1980 (I think). The problem with the 8800's today is that by now they are worn out. Being the big combine of their day they got used hard. Parts availability may become an issue with Agco if it hasn't already.

I would compare it to a John Deere 7700 or IH 915.

I ran an 8800 for 10 years(74 model) and found it to be not a bad,yet not exceptional combine. Make sure the ground drive system is hydrostatic instead of Variable speed belt drive. The hydros were very reliable, the VS mechanical drive was endless expensive trouble. Those bug $1200 VS pulleys wear out as regular as a ticking clock.
I would compare the cost of brand specific parts between white,CaseIH and Deere. A big part of the desicion to replace the old 8800 10 years ago,was when we found the closest AGCO dealer a 200 mile trip, and White specific parts costing twice what the same item sold for at a JD or IH dealer.

I agree, for sure go hydro. They're trouble free. The final drives are a little weak, transmissions also but again are plentiful in salvage yards around here.

I was a parts manager at a White and a JD dealer for 3 years each. Everyone complained about the high cost of Deere parts but Agco parts were as high or higher.
