Still yet another E3 question - traction belt

Hello again. One final thing (for the moment!) I need to ask about is the traction/drive belt on my E3. Should that thing slip when you try to back up? I got stuck in a small ditch Sat. evening with nearly a full hopper of corn. The right wheel would dig, but I couldn't come out of it. I tried to back out, and all I heard was an awful squeal that I assume was the variable speed belt. I noticed the same thing that day when I pulled out of the shed empty and tried to back up a grade (not very steep) into the driveway. Never slips in forward. Is it because I have a cog belt on, or something else? My last 2 combines were hydrostats, so I need a little advice here. Thanks.

Forgot to mention that a cog belt should make no difference, ran one a "G" with an aftermarket cog belt for years an found it worked as well as the others with original equipment belts.

Now that its slipping in both directions I would agree with JMS/MN's comments. If adavancing the ground speed control stops the slipping then it probabaly just needs the belt adjusted, if not then his comments about the driven pulley apply..

Thanks, and I agree- if you pull back on the VS and get to the 'low' end, and the belt is 'floppy loose'- the tightener needs to be adjusted. If parked on a slope- do not trust the braking system. My F2 rolled into the old shop, concrete wall- unloading auger stopped it! About two days to take apart, straighten grain tank, auger drive, hydraulic swing setup, etc. Combine was parked in gear, but belt will not hold it if loose.

CORRECTION! in reply to FordTractorMan, 09-19-2006 07:38:21
Well, I said it didn't slip in forward, but found out different last night. I had half a hopper of corn and was moving the combine in second gear. When the field began to gently slope up, it didn't take long to hear that squeal again. Droppped back to first and no problem. Could it be something simple like belt adjustment?

The operator manual details how to set the tightener for proper tension on the drive belt. If it's a variable speed setup like on bigger gear drive Gleaners, wouldn't hurt to completely disassemble and clean everything. Check the inside of the sheaves for wear-- rough edges, grooves, rings, etc, worn into the sheaves that make a belt hang up. There are 3 replaceable bushings in each variable sheave, also 3 pins that they ride on. Easy to replace if worn. Reassemble and tighten the belt according to directions. I think it calls for 1/8 inch spacing between lower sheaves, or belt riding within 1/4 inch of edge of sheaves for proper tension. If all is correct there- problem is somewhere else.

Not sure, but in that situation I would try to unload before backing out if possible.

That's what I did. As soon as I saw I couldn't move, I walked to the end of the field and brought the tractor & wagon and unloaded. Still not sure what's going on.

Thats a strange situation... The variable speed turns and pulls in the same direction whether going forward or back so I think we can eliminate a belt problem. More likely a brake problem, I think that is where I would start.

Interesting. Could you be more specific?
