This summer when I was combining wheat, I had electrical trouble. The combine ran all afternoon then suddenly quit and didn't have enough juice to crank the engine. After I jumped the E3 a few times, I was able to finish. I had the alternator worked on and put a new regulator on and thought it was fixed. It isn't. I shut it down Sat. night at dark when I was done picking corn and took the tractor and wagon home. When I came back for the combine, it didn't have enough battery to start. One thing the guy at the alternator repair shop mentioned is that there should be a wire running from the "BAT" post on the alternator to the same post on the solenoid where the battery wire connects. I don't have that and didn't hook it up. Did I goof by not listening? Does anyone have a wiring schematic on this? The E3 has the 226 A-C engine. Thanks in advance.

is this a delco alternator? Yes you need a battery postive live wire that bolts to the alternator. Then a turn on wire to the plug connector.

Does your machine have a voltmeter in the instrument panel? If it does watch it as you start the engine, you should see a rise in voltage as the alternator kicks in. (I"m comparing to a L-3 here) I would think a connection between the battery terminal on the alternator and the battery would be necessary. In any case don"t combine with a low battery, the electric clutches will slip under load and eventually burn out.

Thanks, Averyman. It does have an ammeter which appears to be an aftermarket replacement for the original. Haven't noticed it move yet which also concerns me. Yeah, it does seem like there should be a connection. Wish I knew more about electrical systems. The alt. has a plug that plugs into the back of it, but evidently that's not enough. Not to worry about the clutches, the E3 is quite a few years older than the L3 and doesn't have any!
