After this season I am going to change upper and lower tailings augers on my 7700.

On the upper one how much do you have to take off to get the thing out?

On the lower one do you have to remove the gas tank?

Just planning ahead-and warnings or info appreciated.

If I remember correctly, when you remove the lock collar, bearing and plates, there is a slot in the sheet metal on the side opposite the elevator. Remove same parts on the elevator side and screw out the auger.
The upper tailings works the same, but you may have to cut a hole in the cab. Can't remember it there is a removable plate.
Good luck
Vince

Paul, Does the 7700 have a slot cut at either end of the clean or return augers? If so you can simply remove the off end bearing and screw the auger out. Or cut one yourself then cover with metal when reassembling. Move the bearing out to match the thickness of the metal plate. Tom

Thanks. No there isn't a slot that I can feel inside the lower tailings on the left. But I think when we do this I may just do that-it would be so much easier to take it out the left side.

For the upper I may just take Jim's advice and skip it-I guess it hasn't caused any probs and I replaced the right wood block bearing this year.

I assume the bearing is on the outside of the trough? The little plate would be between the bearing and outside of housing. You only need to slot 1/2 of the diameter of the auger. Tom

Dunno Paul, that's a big job your getting yourself into there. I put new bearings on the upper tailings auger on a 6620 a few years ago, and that was a lot bigger job than I thought it would be. I understand your comment about proactive preventative maintenance. Kinda the way I am, but honestly, if your chaffer and sieves are set right, and your crop is in the proper condition to thresh, the tailings system moves a very small volume of material. On my 4400 about 2/3 of the flighting on the upper auger is gone. All you have to do is get the tailings into the cylinder, it's not required to spread them in an even stream across the full width of the cylinder. I have a perforated lower auger tube and perforated bottom elevator door on mine, and that reduces the volume even more. To me the bottom auger is a little more inportant. Can't let too much material get built up in the bottom of the shoe. I had that one out on the 6620, and I think I pulled it out on the fuel tank side, but I don't remember having to take the tank off. Hope this helps a little. Jim.

"just puttin the enginge back in and repainting it," does not = "Nothin much" to me. Sounds like fun but a LOT of work.

What i like to do is tear somthing down, remake it, so it looks like new. Doin a work in prgoress for a year gets boring after some time.... I really hope the grader rebuilds alot faster than the cockshutt.

Pbutler, are you going to do any other winter projects besides your auger on your 7700, just wondering, in the past you have done some pretty great rebuilds.

Nothing exciting-and I hope nothing breaks to make be have something exciting. Just putting in augers and chains. I wasn't 100% sure how long I was going to keep the 7700-now I am really happy with it I am proactively just doing anything that it may need in the next 4-5 years so hopefully then I can just run it.

Going to put in 8 new augers (the 6 long ones that run the length of the machine and 2 tailings augers). They are all pretty sharp now. Of couse new bearings on all those and new bearings in the feederhouse while I have it off. Possibly clean grain and tailings chains-see what they look like after this year.

The brakes are completely gone on this machine-so I should put them on-but with the hydro I haven't really felt the need for them.

I am not the fastest guy in the world so that alone should be a pretty good winter project for me. While I have the augers out will look over the walkers really well and hopefully not have to do anything there.

I wish I had some more projects or rebuilds to do but I am 100% corn this year and with input costs what they are I think the budget will force me to wait a while.

What about you-anything planned for winter?
