I have a 1978 New Holland TR 70 combine that is leaking oil badly from both rotor gearboxes. They are leaking from the output seals, where they are coupled to the rotors. If I remove the rotors, is it possible to disassemble the gearboxes enough to access the seals? The gearboxes look difficult to remove, and I will be removing the rotors anyway, for a different repair. Also, does anyone know how much refregerant the A/C system holds ? Thanks.

The correct way to remove the gearbox is to remove the cover located just below the gearbox and in front of the engine. Place a piece of plywood on the sieves and get inside the separator. You have to work on your knees to remove the gearbox and take it out through the separator. You will see a lot of TR 70's with a notch cut in the angle iron on one or the other sides. This allows the gearbox to be removed with out taking the panel off the top of the separator. I always felt that cutting the angle iron weakened the frame. If the seals are leaking the bearings are bad and need to be replaced. You might want to move up to the TR 85 gearboxs.

Thanks for the info. I have the left gearbox removed, and am working on the right. The bearings seem nice and tight. This machine has been sitting in a shed since 1980, and has very low hours.

Have you checked the vents? If it has been setting that long and the bearings are tight there is a chance the vents are plugged and over the years the heat and cold has caused the seals to leak. It's worth checking.

I checked all the easy things first, but I'm not that lucky. The oil pours out through the output seals as soon as you fill the gearboxes. It doesn't even have to be running.
