Small pull-type combines

I'm trying to educate myself about small pull type combines, suitable for trailing behind a Ford 9N or similar small tractor with reletively low pto hp.

We'd like to plant about 5 acres in wheat - probably not every year, so I don't need a big, fast, wide, high reliability machine. Old, small, simple and fixable is what I like.

Can anyone reccomend some reference materials covering this sort of combine?

I read about machines on this forum selling for $500 - $1000 that could be OK, but without a good reference it's difficult to know.

Thanks everyone for the good ideas.

I will ponder these suggestions over the weekend and try to produce a summary table for general distribution.

I"ve noticed that I"m not the only one looking for these things, but almost no-one is making new ones, since there isn"t any way to make a profit making them.

In the mean time, the more suggestions for small combine types to research the better!

Keep those cards and letters coming in!

Thanks;
JC

I pulled a A/C Allcrop 60 for several years with a JD 40, About 25 hp. Biggest problem was not hp, but lack of live pto. When pushed the clutch to stop, everything stopped.. Found an A/c power unit and that solved the problem. Although running the tractor and power unit did suck up right much gas. Allcrop 60 was a great machine. Bert

I'd get an AC All Crop 60. Best for its size and the ole 9N will run it. 500 georges should get you a good unit.
Have fun.

For a 9N you will probably want a combine with its own engine on it.If you could go up a bit in horesepwer and find a tractor capable of operating a remote hydraulic cylinder to lift the platform, then there is a John Deere 30 listed for sale at photo ads.It looks to be in good condition. The JD 30 is a good auger machine and then canvases would not be a problem for you.

Thanks for the hint - took a look - will add JD30 to my list of possibles - found a reference to JD25 that uses canvas - maybe will come up with my own reference book eventually.

If possible, would prefer to keep the 9N and get a combine with it"s own motor, like Dearborn-Woods from late 40"s, but I realize that moves me into bigger stuff that is harder to move.

I"m in Vermont, and know that there will be a long drive in a flatbed involved here eventually.

You could run an IH 42R with a 9N, they were rated for a 1-2 plow tractor minimum. I'd think you could probably handle a 52R as well, it's just a newer 42R with a 5' cut instead of 4' on the 42R. Also you can find some 52R's with Continental or IH Cub power units. These combines were built from 1940-1951 so they're canvas feed, but they do a nice job. I have three (two for the field and one for parts) that I "play" with.
