Looking for info about the operation of modern day mechanical cotton picking (just how does it work?) Anybody know of a website that explains it in detail?

This is only a very symplistic explination. The picker has picker bars with rotating barbed spindles. As the spindles extend into the cotton boll the cotton is pulled by the barbs and wraps around the rotating spindles. The spindles then rub against rotating doffers which are turning in a direction to wipe the cotton off or the spindle barbs and then air carries the cotton to the basket. A cotton picker "picks" only the clean cotton from the bolls. In some areas they use a cotton stripper. The cotton stripper "strips" the entire boll from the plant and additional equipment at the gin has to remove the cotton fibers from the boll before the cotton can be ginned. Cotton "picked" is ready to be ginned by the gin. Short explination but maby you can follow the idea.

Jarold(just kiddin'), your explanation is a good one. For someone who pulled a sack to pick cotton, they are amazing inventions. Remember that old song,"I Never Picked Cotton"? Well, I can't sing that song, but I can sing,"I'll Never Pick Cotton Again".

There was a show on the History channel called Cotton. There was a little about cotton pickers on there. There was also a show called Harvesting that showed how a picker "picked" cotton.
