Who can give pointers on the GMC diesel motor used in the 702? What are some things to check on these rigs that are now mostly 35 years old?

This one has a husking bed and a 3 row corn head. I have some experience around gas Uni's, but not the old diesels. The farmer who owns it has quit ear corn for next year and wants to send it down the road... He has owned it about five years or so. He said no real trouble he had. Has been shedded and overall looks well. I would like to avoid a big break waiting to happen. Thanks.

Shedded is a plus, but START THAT THING REGULARLY, and SERVICE THE AIR FILTER. If they sit for more than 8 months, they will lock up on you, gauranteed. I have a 705 with the same motor. Good little units if maintained properly, get a manual and follow it word for word, its what it's designed to do. Relatively fuel efficient, but that is 2nd hand info as I haven't got mine running yet, for the simple reason it was hard starting, becuase the air cleaner had NEVER, N-E-V-E-R been serviced, and because it was hard starting the starter got worn out, and because the starter got worn out it sat, and because it sat that V6 locked up. I bought it cheap enough, but it has been a raw deal. No water in the oil, just semi-seized pistons. Good luck, great little units, and worth much more than they are going for at the moment. Oh, and it will handle 4 rows, depending on what husker you have. It might have a 3 narrow head or be picking 6 wide, which would be nice to have a 3 row. I might be planting 6's this year, but I'll either run 4 and 2 or run 4 and a 234 or some other 2 row picker behind it.
