A friend stopped by today to tell me that a 35 Massey SP combine was brought in to a junkyard 30 miles away last week.

It will probably be junked because they basically will let no one in the yard anymore except to unload. They paid $70 a ton for it and if they would sell it they'd want 15 cents a pound.I wish farming paid that good.

The 35 Massey SP I own was hauled in to our local junk yard but they kept it around until a collector could save it.They priced it reasonable too.

Why are people so stupid that they will sell a collectable combine to a junk yard?

In the past 2-3 years many combines, tractors, cars, trucks, dozers, etc that could have been restored or used for parts have been destroyed at this junkyard 30 miles away.People even haul 100 pound suitcase IH tractor weights in when they could sell them for $35-50 each to the tractor pullers. They are getting ready to bust up a decent LA Case tractor.

Not to be rude but why do you guys always talk about saving the littler combines especally the MH 35. What about the MH 80 and 90s or The JD 55 and 95. Lots of those get scrapped wach day. A yyearago I was at an auction with my dad (im only 16) and a shedded running MH 90 sp couldn't get a dollar bid. The auction was too far away for me to buy it. I try to save all equipment from the junkyards. Fortunately many of the neighbors know I collect anything old so I've bought most of their stuff. Many junkyards will sell stuff out of their yards around here (SE WY)for a reasonable price. My dad was at a junkyard the other day and said he say a late 50s International pickup that was a 4x4 on the bottom of a pile. People these days

one thing is storage , and another is price of parts. plus the cost of trying to get someone to move a combine. i had someone at an auction fix me up with someone who would haul it, then after i had bought it and the auction was over and everyone gone, they backed out of hauling. i was able to come back the next day with someone to follow me and drove it 20 miles home.a small combine is usually less complicated and less intimidating for a beginner to work on.

i've seen a nice plow and other stuff go at sales and was either late getting there or they changed the time the equipment sold and found junk men cutting this up.sometimes they were also farmers. wasnt their idea of"good" equipment. so off it went. they seem to get a sadistic pleasure out of cutting up good equipment and turning it into scrap.and most wont sell it even if you offer them a profit on it? at the cost of acetalene you'd think they wouldnt want to cut it up.some i talked to a few hours ago had bought a mf35 combine . he didnt give me the exact price but said the previous owner had asked $2000.oo. and i imagine he got it for a little less.

Tim, I can't agree more about how some fools just want to destry something-for no other reason than to see it destroyed, period. It's not just machinery, but furniture, dishes, glassware-you name it. Still, I have confronted others at sales because I thought a certain implement or tool would be really useful. I offer what could only be some 3-4 times the scrap rate value. No, they say if I want it that bad, I'll have to pay their price for it. Forget it. They want more for the item than they make in 3-4 days of constant cutting. Yes, acetylene IS expensive. I've heard a lot of scroungers tell me unless iron really goes up, it's sure not worth it to butcher any old combines, vehicles and tanks. Sheet metal is really on the low end of the value scale, when factoring torching cost.

Like I told the first poster, though, whatever it takes to buy the M-F 35 out of that scrap yard is worth it. Those machines can bring as high as $2,000 here in Oklahoma. Compared to a new plot combine, that is a bargain!

I can"t understand just why they would not allow the little combine to be sold outright. I don"t know about .15/lb for what they sell, but have you tried just offering them just double what they paid for that 35? That is one very small combine and probably doesn"t even weigh a ton dripping wet. Yes, I know it sounds high, but say you do give $150-200 for it. You will get your money back on a deal like that.

Yes, it is just stupid to send old machinery to a recycler. I can"t believe the operators of that scrap yard are equally ignorant-willing to crush a rare tractor that could be sold to a serious collector for top dollar!

Post their phone number. Some people here should be calling them about these things.

This yard used to be owned by a local guy and then it got sold to a big yard out of KC.I've never been in it since it changed hands.

A friend is over there all the time and tells me what he sees.It used to be a dime a pound but now its 15 cents a lb take it or leave it.They dont negoiate any.Its all junk to them.Due to getting sued by an injured customer at their KC yard they no longer let people look around in this yard. You have to haul a load of scrap in to sell to get to see stuff.

A 35 MH weighs 4,000 lbs so it would take $600 to get it out of there. It has some parts missing.I gave $350 for mine not running but its in decent shape.

I know where a complete 35 minus gas tank is for $500.Mines much better than it.I also know of two parts combines not far away.

WOW! I had no idea the little combine weighed so much! I know the M-H 27 only weighs about 6,500 lbs. I still don't think $600 is out of the question considering the value of these combines. It's now a question of having the money. I still believe they would let someone in-not to scrounge, but look for something specific-supervised by an employee. They stand to make above scrap prices if they are willing to just do that much. At least it's worth a try.

Several area collectors are trying to save the better stuff that comes in to this yard but the yard manager is getting impossible to deal with.Lots of stuff just isnt worth 15 cents a lb especially if its only good for parts. They wont sell individual parts.I wish I had better news.

It all goes back to people whom wont sell a collector a thing but will practically give it to a junkyard.I'm running want ads to buy older-smaller combines and never even get a call.

I think the thing to do, is trace this yard back to the parent company--the one in KC. Place a call to THEIR manager and make a formal complaint about this yard operator--how he is costing them money by not selling out good parts or equipment. Obviously, this jerk is NOT a businessman of the slightest degree!
