I am thinking a playing with 20 acres of sunflowers. I am wanting to press the oil from the seeds. My question what type of equipment is needed to harvest the seed heads.

Thanks

-Dave

OMG, you are so right about the fires in sunflowers! It doesn't even have to be the oil varieties, either. Simply put, it is a potentially dangerous crop for combines, but what else can harvest them?

Dave, so do you grow grapes commercially? I'm interested in learning some vitaculture.

I have about 4 acres of grapes, which I would like to expand to 10. That is about all I can manage. I do enjoy it quite alot.

So are these table or wine grapes?

Wine grapes. I grow Cabrenet Sauviynon (a red French grape). Reisling (A white German grape)and temprnillo (a Spanish red). I am small scale, only harvesting 5 to 6 tons per year. There are some picture on my website>Link

I sell to a couple of small winerys in my area.

Dave, that is so interesting! I sure don't need more than maybe 2 acres, but I've always wanted to grow really good table grapes-and not have skins that are too tough. I don't know if it's just the variety or the climate, but just about all the home-grown grapes around here, are not really as palatable as those bought in stores. I see you're in Texas. I'm from the Dallas area originally, myself. I really do love grapes!

Okay, Achemon, is this why you like grapes so much? These really look cute, though.

Actually table grape are harder to grow (as far as selling) as they have to look perfect. Wine grape can be a little off and still sell. For person consumption, 5 or 10 plants will do.

Combine with a grain head that has sunflower pans.

Or a JD row-crop head on a combine if you"re planting in 30" rows. A good combination could be a JD 4400 combine and a 453A 4-row 30" row-crop head. The JD row-crop heads can also been adapted to other makes of combines with a Bish adapter. I"ve seen one on a Gleaner L2.
FYI---in case you go looking, Deere`s numbering system on the heads works like this: 1st digit indicates number of rows, second digit is the model series, and the third digit is row width. A 653 is a six-row, 50 series, 30" row head. A 454 is a four-row, 50 series, 40" row head.

By row-crop, you mean the one used for soybeans, right?- not a corn head. I've seen one, but they never caught on around here. Guess they did a nice job, but since they were width-specific and we have farmers in the area that run ev erything from drilled beans to 15,22,30,36,38 inch rows.....float and flex heads prevailed.
