Have the opportunity to purchase a shedded 55 with platform for $100.00. It's very old as the auger folds towards the grain bin when not in use. I figure it'd be kind of neat to have around as a collectors item that would maybe cut a couple acres a year and show off. I have other combines to cut the main part of my crops. It only needs a steering cable. Can anybody here tell me about these? Is it something that can be replaced easily? Also can it be fixed without replacing the whole part? Have ran the newer squareback 55's, never heard of a steering cable. Also, about how hold would this machine be? 50's, 60's? I'll listen to any info that anybody has about these machines, thanks.

It is a pre-1960 combine. It should have a Hercules engine; flathead and fairly simple. The steering cables were manufactured in several configurations. The oldest 55's had a vertical steering wheel with a roller chain and sprocket on the steering shaft wwith cables attached to the ends of cables. Later 55's had a slanted console with ignition, engine instrumentation under the steering wheel, but still used cables. Should be straightforward to replace. Ben

Has to be a HI model.Could be a 1947 to a 1959 (I think)model.1960 was a Hi Lo model and the auger folded back. This combine should have a Hercules engine on it.Engine should be worth more than the $100 alone.
