I am looking for a small combine to use on about twenty acres of land. I am interested in either a John Deere or Gleaner, a 4400 or F, F2. prefferably Diesel. What are the Pros and cons of these machines? What should I be looking for on them? Any other models I should look at? I dont want to spend any more than about 2k. -Thanks

IMO either of those machines will do you fine for 20 acres. I wouldn't worry much about the Diesel-no more that you are going to be running a gas machine would be fine-also cheaper and easier to work on if something goes wrong.

Unless you get one in dazzling condition spend some $ the first year when you first get the combine and get it in good shape-replace ANY questionable bearings, belts, idlers, etc. Then you will probably run many years trouble free with either of those machines.

If you don't need a corn head you can get small older combine for way less than the $ above-most cornheads in my are bring more than the box and grain head together. With cornhead you are in the right ballpark.

Sorry to post a classified here but since you asked I have a 4400 gas with both heads for sale in Central, IL if interested.

Don't know anything about a 4400 JD, but I own a 1981 Gleaner F2 diesel, Hydro and a 1973 K. You might look at a K as I wouldn't think you could find a very good F2 for your price range unless it's an older variable drive, gas with manual unfolding auger. But you can find an excellent K for $2,000. That's what we gave for ours. Our K is in good shape and will run all day without problems. Just don't get in too big of a hurry,if you decide to run a 13 ft head, like we do. We cut most of our beans with the F2 this year because we only had one operator. The other posts are right, Gleaners are easy to work on and adjust and simple to operate. Good luck.

Ya over looked one fine old combine that will do and excelent job and that is a Massey and for that massive amount of ground that you have a 300 late model would be all that you would need as far as a diesel powered one for what you have and as much as you are going to run it it is not needed and the extra cost will never be recovered . A 300 gasser would not use 35 gal of gas on that and they are a vary easy combine to work on and with a late model they have the quick tach heads and can handel up to a three row head and with a two row they will run thru corn faster then you can trout. And they don't take up the whole barn for storeage.

Are you sure you need a diesel.Picked up a real nice K gleaner gas for just 400 dollars with two heads in Iowa and we have used it for two years now on 40ac of beans and has worked really well.We always picked our corn in the ear for the cows but this year we lost our picker to fire so we up graded to a f2 with no plans to sell the K.

Both are good machines. Got a dealer near you, combines always - always need parts.

The JD is harder to work on yourself, lots of burried parts & shafts full of pulleys. They are built tough tho, but by now a 4400 will have lots of hours on it.

The Gleaner is easier to work on with your own normal tools.

I have a 50 acre farm. I bought a K Gleaner 3 years ago for $500.00 It does all I need. I have farmed most of my life (54yrs) and I have owned most combine brands, JD, Massey, IHC, Gleaner. The Gleaner is by far the easiest to work on. I wouldn't have a massey as a gift. I had 2 new ones,510 diesels, and they were both junk when new. Small gas combines can be bought cheap.

I've only ran a JD 45 hilo, Gleaner F & F2. But I would agree with what you have to say, from other experiences I've heard..... ;)
