I am helping a neighbor get his MF 540 running after sitting outside for a year in order to sell it. It started good but the throttle lever is stuck. I pulled off the access panel and soaked it with penertrating fluid. What kind of idiot engineer would make a throttle lever that small I can barely grasp with my index finger&thumb? Stuck on 3/4. Any Ideas? Clutch has been sticking too. You start with the lever in neutral but it lurches forward until you kill it. I supposed moisture has gotten to the clutch and rust built up. Anybody seen one has sold for lately? I hear there reputation is not good and it's in very good shape and been well taken care of but hasn't been very reliable. No place to get parts around here& owner is going to semi-retire. It's a 80'w/1900 hours,13' head & 4-row wide corn head. Thanks guys.

I believe the throttle lever hooks to a cable like on a lawn mower (hardened steel wire inside of a outer wrap of either wire or plastic). I am sure it draws moisture and sort of rusts up. I have sprayed mine with penetrating oil too. As for the size of the lever you are not regulating engine speed on a combine anything like that of a tractor. So, I am sure Massey thought to make the lever as small as possible and let the primary levers be big and easy to use. I have been told that back in the days of the John Deere 45, 55 and 95 and the International 303's, etc that Massey's were actually the "Caddy's" of the combine industry. I think you are right in saying the 540's didn't have the best reputation. I believe they drove the thresher with a flat belt which could loose power and slug it up pretty easily. Also, with a 4 row corn head the rear shoe capacity was sort of marginal. At the sametime I am positive many individuals loved the Massey 540. A Massy 410 could probably walk all over a 540. Reason ... a wider straw walker, seive and chaffer on a 410. They do not bring much. I say a decent 540 on an auction bring $1500 last year. The same year I saw one bring $100. Who knows ... takes two bidders. Probably a good running and looking one should bring $750 - $1500. The 44 corn head brings between $50 and $300. The 1144 corn head brings between $50 and $1000 depending on quality and demand. The grain platforms are not worth much either. I bought a real nice one with a UII reel, floating cutter bar, variable speed reel, poly on the underside and reel height cylinders for $35 last fall. So, just depends on condition and how many people want it. Goodluck

Thanks, Andy. I popped open the door for the engine compartment, and can't see where the throttle cable goes to.Must be around the back side of the engine. It always did have a tendency to slug up easily in soybeans mostly. Funny thing is the last time we ran it on 25 acres of Oats 2 yrs ago it didn't break down once. Same thing with that same field with wheat a couple of years before that. I guess beans and corn are just too hard on this model, many breakdowns when harvesting those crops.
