Dear All, I am hoping that some-one can tell me what model of engine powered the McCormick 55 series hay-balers (55-T & 55-W) produced in the 1950"s.
The power-unit was a small 4 cylinder engine ,possibly an International UC-60 (Cub Lo-Boy) or UC-123 (Farmall 100) or similar engine.
I have seen one of these balers for sale as a "restoration project" and naturally I want to identify the engine before considering it any further.
Regards from Michael Halsall Melbourne, Australia

The 55 used the C-60 which was the same basic engine as the Cub.

A friend of mine just got one of the power units from a Model 55 Hay Baler. I have a friend that works at Binder Books, and he had never had a call on the books for that unit. He dug into it, and found us the parts manual, and the service manual for the engine. There is a separate serviced manual for the rest of the machine. We also got the Farmall service manual too as there is a lot of good info in it.

There were three engines used on these units, known as the BU or BP series motors, depending on what yours says (On ours, the motor says BU, while the books call them a BP). One, which is what we have, is the 113 CID motor, which is more or less a Farmall A engine with a belt drive attached and a larger grille. It is the BU-2 engine. There was a smaller engine, which is the Farmall Cub engine with the belt drive and a special screen grille, which I believe is the BU-1 engine. I have seen a recent eBay listing with one of those units on it. There is also a larger engine, which I do not remember what it is, but I believe it may be a Farmall H engine, and that it is probably called the BU-3 engine. All of the engines had a special precleaner that was peculiar to the Hay Balers, which are still available new. Not sure, but in looking for one, I think the radiator may be the same as the related Farmalls, which makes replacing them easier. The hay balers also did not use standard mufflers like the Farmalls, but used a special spark arrestor assembly that mounted on the manifold. If yours is bad or missing, they are not available new, but a standard Farmall pipe and muffler will fit. In addition to the standard front-mount engine crank, there is another engine crank that fits the belt-drive end, so you can start it from either end.

Other items that are different from the Farmalls are the hoods, the hood brackets, the radiator supports, the gauge panel, the optional hour meter, and the fuel tanks. The fuel tanks are the same as the tanks for analogous International power units (U-series). The parts and service books for our BU-2/BP-2 unit shows that there are no decals on the fuel tanks or anywhere else, except for one on the engine oil breather cap. Our unit does indeed have decals on it, but our oil breather cap is gone. Our tank says "HAY BALER" on the top half on the rear, using the same font as the "FARMALL" decals. It has the square "IH" logo decal on the bottom half, just like the Cub Cadet used on its attachements (blade, tiller, wagon, etc.). There is nothing on the sides or the grille, nor is there any badge on the grille. The "HAY BALER" decal is not available new, so we are going to be repopping that if anyone needs one. The "IH" decal is available new at Binder Books. We do not know what the oil breather cap has on its decal, and it is not available new in any of the Farmall decal sets. If anyone is interested in loaning us yours, we will duplicate that too.

If you call Binder Books at 503-684-2024, ask for Carl, and he has all of the books for these units now.
