Im getting out of the army in a few months and moving back home to help on the farm. It's around 300 acres. They dont have a big horsepower tractor at home so im wondering which one would suit us best. We need something to due the heavy pulling around there, but i dont think we need anything much more than 100-110 HP.(we farm with 14 foot tillage equipment) Ive been looking at some in the 100-110 HP range (Oliver 1955, JD 4020, White 2-105, IH 806, AC 7010)Any opinions or experience with any of these models and brands, or any models I might have left out let me know.Im tryin to watch the budget a bit. The only other thing is, we have some soil conservation restrictions and the ground cant be moldboarded, only chiseled to preserve some residue on top. So my other question is, will any of these tractors pull a small chisel plow?? Any comments on some of my questions would be great. Thanks guys!!

First decide your brand, keep in mind how far and what parts are available. I use both red and green and they have performed well. dont rule out a case for cheap horsepower. If I was starting out with 300 acres I would consider a 4430 John Deere or a 1086 IH. Good luck.

I agree with Paul. At least around here, you could be looking for larger tractors and spending the same money. We found out that two 14' disks are no match for one 20' disk, at least with our work schedules. With chisel plowing, you need to maintain ground speed to go a good job so extra horsepower is nice.

IH's are usually the best power for the dollar, but you better not be afraid to split a tractor in half or tear apart a rear end. I'd be shopping for 1066's and 1256's if it were me.

Around 'here' a 130 - 150 hp tractor of the same vintage would cost about the same, and get a whole lot more done for you in a day. Just something to consider.

You may want to consider a 856 instead of a 806. It would be nicer shifting and have a larger engine.

Stay away from the Oliver 1955. Well known in these parts for engine reliability problems. They cranked too much out of that block in that tractor. The White 2-105 will give you good service.
IH 806 is a good puller but the Torque Amplifier and the shift may bother you. 4020 is the weakling of the tractors you listed, at 90 HP, like most Deeres of that vintage it won"t pull what a competing IH (856) can but it"s nicer to drive. I don"t know much about the A-C 7010. Any on your list will pull a 7-shank mounted chisel, the 7010 and 2-105 should have no problems with 9 shanks. 806 probably wouldn"t either, but around here, a 4020 would work its guts out on a 9 tooth. If color isn"t an issue, look at an MF 1105 as well.

The JD 4020 probably would be the most expensive tractor on your list that you made, but I can tell you from experience with mine it is hard to beat. We have at least 15,000 hours on ours and she still runs strong. My dad had a 1850 Oliver and hated it because the hydraulics and brakes always went bad on it. No one around here runs AC, but I know a couple guys who have a 806 and a White 2-105 and they are still running them. I always thought the 4020 was one of the best tractors ever built. Just my 2 cents..... .
