Besides combining, are there any other practical methods of harvesting soybeans such a chopping with a forage harvestor. And will cattle eat such as soybean silage ?

Difficult to harvest that way. Baled, the stems are green yet, leaves are powder dry dust. Hard to make them ensile properly.

But a good high protien feed if you can make it work.

As No. 2 suggested, they make great hay; used to be a variety developed 'specially for that..... Laredo..... .as I recall. When we custom harvested silage, had a neighbor who planted beans with his corn; turned out all right, but made a dark, bad smelling silage. Probably because the beans were still green, mid-bloom when the corn was ready to cut..... ....Cattle ate it all right.

I"VE BALED THEM AS HAY. A FEW YEARS BACK A FELLOW I KNEW CHOPPED THEM AND PUT THEM IN A SILO. HE CLAIMED HE COULD GET MORE MILK PER ACRE OFF THEM THAN CORN SILAGE. HE"D PLANT THE FIRST CROP IN EARLY APRIL, CHOP THEM AROUND THE 4TH OF JULY, SPREAD MANURE, PLANT A SECOND CROP AND HARVEST A HALF WAY DECENT CROP BEFORE FROST, PLANT WHEAT, THEN CHOP IT THE FIRST OF APRIL. IT WORKED FOR ALITTLE WHILE!!!
