The very early JD 55 combines had manual ground speed control ( I mean the lever to change ground speed was not hydraulic, but moved by grunt and by golly!) and the fuel tank was on the left side near the rear of the machine and the unloading auger was not folding. There may be other differences which I've forgotten. Dad had one of those early ones and I've tried to find an Operator's Manual including trying at Deere Publications but not successful. I have Operator's Manual OM-H13-(1-57) which I got from Deere Publications but it isn't correct for those early machines. Anyone familiar with that vintage of 55 and maybe know where there is a manual for it?

My dad bought a new model 55 in 1950. It was the first combine I ever operated. I clearly remember the long lever to the right of the seat which controlled the variable speed. I think they upgraded this to hydraulic in about 1953. The transmission shifting lever was on the left side and it was modified a few years later also. About the first or second year we had this combine my father and uncle roaded it from central Kansas to Oklahoma and did some custom cutting. It was a great old machine.
