Was hoping someone could help me with the part number on the ignition switch. Is there a source for part numbers on tractors this old because it make it a lot easier to buy parts with the numbers. I'm a Stens dealer and they have very good cross reference charts.

Thanks!

Thanks folks! I did think it was the regulator-rectifier at first but after following the procedure in the shop manual, I discovered that the terminal on the switch that the reg is wired to isn't conducting to the batt when the key is in the run position. The switch is a rusty mess because I just don't have enough storage room and this poor thing sits outside sometimes!

RE: JD 140 I agree with the last post..if she starts and runs but doesn't charge ...chances are real good that the rectifier/converter is bad. (little box on the left-hand side of the tractor, just behind the fuel tank, next to the dash. If it's bad, better see Jd service for correct installation. Best of luck, they are awesome little tractors ! Jim B.

All John Deere parts can be looked up for free on John Deere's web site, registering, or accounts needed. Thats about the best source for JD part #s.

the 140 uses 2 keyswitches, depending on the serial number and type of ignition system it has. Put in the wrong one and a lot of smoke comes out of some very expensive electronic components.

The link below should take you to JD's parts site.

CAREFUL with that broad "it uses TWO switches" statement!

Looks like FOUR to me, and I can tell you lots of smoke will leak out if you use the wrong one for your serial #!

AM102543 SWITCH 1 -10000 IGNITION (4-PRONG, MAGNETO) (SUB FOR AM30771)

AM102544 SWITCH 1 10001-22400 IGNITION (5-PRONG, SOLID-STATE TRACTORS)

AM103286 SWITCH 1 22401- IGNITION (5-PRONG, BATTERY-COIL TRACTORS)

AM32318 SWITCH 1 30000- IGNITION

Thanks for that link!! Looks like I better get the serial number when I get home but I did look at both serial numbers from 30,000 above, and below and it looks like Sten's crosses it over to the same switch. The one serial number range has a few different switches available depending on if the tractor has a magneto or not....

What ever I end up with, I'll check with a continuity meter to make sure it matches the working parts of the switch I have now. The tractor will start and run, just not charge.

If the keyswitch doesn't do it, your problem may be a faulty regulator/rectifier. This converts ac voltage created by the stator coils under the engine flywheel into DC volts for the battery.
