My 1280 after 20 years of service is giving me problems, while plowing snow. I I have to advance
the speed lever to full position in order for it to to move. I know its a trnny problem, I just serviced it last year, new filter, and topped it off wih IH fluid. Its too damn cold and snowy out there...Is there any place where I can start. She still lookes like new, garage kept, and I know I will never find another tractor with that quality! Thanks, Andy

As another suggestion, remove the Check Valves from the top of the Transmission and inspect them. Make sure the internal parts (ball and springs) have free travel. Clean them up using your favorite cleaner (lacquer thinner, acetone, carb cleaner, etc). Then blow them out real good. Then install them back into the Hydro.

In addition to changing the HyTran Fluid, I would strongly recommend, that you remove the rear transmission cover, drain all the oil. clean the entire rear end from any gunk, and then blow it out real good. Obtain & install a new rear cover gasket, then a new filter and Hydro Fluid.

As soon as I can get the gasket and the hydro fluid,I think it takes about 6.6 liters..Ill
rip it apart, along with a new fiter. I took
off the cover and checked the linkage, it seems
a liitle wore, but why would it happen so quickly? The tractor will move back and forth, but only with the lever fully up or down...and then I noticed that it will surge, like it low on fluid.

Thanks to both of you! I will change the fluid and filter and check the linkage...I just cannot get rid of it!. It is the last of the way things used to be engineered and manufactered!

My suggestion is to totally drain and replace the HyTran Fluid. If the fluid is original, 20 plus years would indicate it is way past it's useful life. Install a new Hydro Filter again and then check your performance.

Start by removing rear fenders, check hydro linkage on side of hydro for broke or worn pieces. If all ok presure checks are next, manuals are easy to find for help doing this. Do not get rid of unit, they are the best made tractors around. I have 14 cubs and have repaired them for over 30 years. Good luck
