Purchased a John Deere LA140 for an acre of steep lawn. The belt drive just does not seem to fulfill my needs. It slips constantly. I am looking at Cub Cadet shaft drives. Is this more in line with my type of terrain?

I have 5 cubs all but 1 have turf type tires. I cut for 2 seasons with the 106 and 10.50 ags and hardly any damage to the yard. I do have some hills, so steep that really need front weight on the tractor. My friend has a deere 240 with ags and a small hil and he dosnt tear up the grass. After you look at the belts and pullies try to fill the rear tiresto add a little more weight or chains as someone stated.

Get an old Gravley 8XXX series garden tractor, will go most anywhere.

If you have turf tires on and your belt is slipping before your tires the drive belt needs adjustment or replaced.

I have a old shaft driven Cub 126 that does well on my hilly yard. Even with chains it still slips here and there. The best traction mower I have used is the Cub I1000 series ZTR with the steering wheel. I beleive this is due to it having two transmissions in the rear one for each wheel. If one wheel slipps the other is still turning, unlike the old 126 which stops dead if a wheel spins

The Cub I1000 was a gift to me. The quality is less than stellar. At 25 hrs it has dumped the PTO belt once, loosed the steering gear bolt on the right front axle once, consistently sticks the left transmission brake on when it is left running with the parking brake on. Easy fix just reach under the rear and give it a tug. This will also allow you to find that the transmissions run HOT,VERY HOT. I suspect that the 5 year extended Warranty will be about as long as this mower lasts with the yard it is used on. BUT the traction IS great I can take it up slopes the 126 won't make.

I would prefer a tractor with a driveshaft. I have that on a Wards tractor made by Gilson. The problem that I think you will encounter even with a driveshaft on the tractor is traction on hilly slopes. I have noticed that on my tractor with turf tires that you don't get very good traction.
I use my tractor for plowing the garden and for plowing snow and I use chains. The tires with the ag tread would give better traction, but there's been a lot of problems of lawn damage.
