The above information is correct, but I'll add some to it. Some reel mowers do in fact have a reverse for back lapping, our golf course has it only on a large Toro brand fairway mower. Your's will probably require a drive unit that will turn the mower reels backwards at a slow speed to be lapped,(do not try lapping them fast). If lapping fairway reels at the course where I work, we use 180 grit water soluble compound and when we lap the tee and greens mower reels we use finer,120 grit as the grass it cuts is finer that fairway grass. Continue lapping till the blade looks dull and the rolled up edge on the rear of the blade is gone.
The bed knife plays an important part in these mowers ability to cut good. It has a lip on it and when it wears enough it changes the angle the reel contacts the knife and the cut is affected. This is known as the cut "attitude" and it is important that it is the same on all reels so you don't leave streaks on the grass from some reels dragging the grass rather hard before cutting it. Reel mowers are expensive and time consuming to keep up but will leave a nice cut if kept right. It takes a little time to get used to setting the height and other things, but they do a nice job if you have good grass and time and money to deal with.

When a reel mower is sharpened and set-up right they should cut a sheet of paper like a pair od scissors.

I'm not sure about your brand; But in the past with JD models you have a knob you pull and it throws blades in rev.while their spinning you take a paint brush and a lapping compound made for sharpening and slop it on the blades, they sharpen themselfs against the cutting bar that they ride against. It (The bar)can then be adjusted a tad closer to the blades. You can test the sharpnest by sliding a business card between the two,it should cut it without any force.Hope this helps,Dude11
