Hi, I purchased a Deere 300 lawn tractor at an auction and I think the wiring harness is messed up. Can anyone tell me how to run enough wires just to see if it will run. It has a Kohler engine in it. I dont want to waste a lot of time on it if its not worth it. I know it worth more it parts than I paid for it. Thanks Art Lancaster,NH

JT I believe has it right for jumping to start.

The PTO switch has to be off and the hydro handle deep in the neutral slot/switch for it to start normally.

Good tractors. I have two. Just bought a new deck for one. Tractor is nearly 30 years old and a new deck (new style) was still available.
Good luck

to find out if it will run, take a jumper wire, hook one side from the ground on battery to the engine and another from the positive side of battery to the positive side of coil from a good battery. Then take jumper cables hook one from ground of battery to the engine and then hook the other from the positive side of battery to the starter lug, this will make engine turn over, and if the the points and coil are good, this will give the engine fire, squirt gas in the throat of carb, if it is gonna run, this will make it run until the gas runs out.

Here's a wiring diagram for a Kohler engine not sure if it will help you. Your ignition may be similar. Hal
PS: I would call your local JD dealer and see if they will fax or email you a copy of the diagram.

Thanks for posting that. I'm about to dig into an old John Deere 110 and I'm sure it will help.

It even prints the right size.

I had forgotten that I still had that diagram. My Wards tractor has that generator/starter, but it doesn't have the auto type coil. Glad you could use it. Hal
