A friend of mine bought a mower with the recoil start Deere K engine and has been fixing it up. He had some engine issues and replaced the igniter and capacitor which fixed the problem. A couple of weeks later he was mowing and suddenly the mower stopped just as if you had turned the key off on it. It refuses to start and has no spark. We have checked all of the wiring, unhooked all of the safety switches and still have nothing. Any ideas what the most likely problem is?

unpluging the regulator isnt going to do it Follow the wires from engine that goes to a brown connector with 3 wires in it
Un plug it an see if it has spark Best check with a known good plug 1 in it now may be fuel fouled from trying to start it
By unplugging here it eliminates the unit harness from the system
whats happening is ur getting no current thur main harness to energize the start relay
Beside the regulator is a round capasitor that could also be bad
Change it along with the regulator
Check to see if there is any burnt wires in the regulator connector for this can cause the problems ur having
Let me know what u find Gary

Gary, Thanks for the reply. The spark was checked with a new plug and a spark tester. I have checked it for burnt, broken or damaged wires. The capacitor and ignitor were replaced earlier, think I need to replace the capacitor again? I'll get a regulator and see what that does for it.

is this a commerical walk behind mower ?????
If so unplug the engine harness from the main harness an see if it runs
If it does the regulator rectifer is bad
No current is going thur system to energize the ignition relay
Connections could be bad also at regulator
Further questions feel free to mail me
Good Luck Gary

Gary, Yes it is the commercial walk behind. One of the first things we did was unplug the harness and we still got nothing. So you think it's the regulator rectifer? According to my parts book I see a voltage regulator, is that what you are talking about? Thanks.

You say a "K" engine. Well JD has use a Kohler and Kawasaki engine both of which could be called "K" engines but they are VERY differant. Which brand of engine are you working on?

It"s a Kawasaki. My manual just refers to the "John Deere K series" I which lead me to think it was made by Deere but then I noticed there was a Kawasaki label on the side of the engine.

Get ready to spend some serious money. I worked on a JD 5 wheeler AMT 600 I think. 8hp Kawa. coil was bad on the CDI. About $230 from mother Deere. The owner decided to repower with an 8 hp B&S engine.

check and see if it has a resistor in the psark plug boot, you are dealing with a Kawasaki engine, and I am not sure if they have these, a lot fo the Japanese engines use a resistor in the plug boot, why I do not know.

Is this the Kohler engine? It may need a new ignition module (coil). If you pull the fan shroud over the flywheel you may have an ignition
module similar to the one in this parts breakdown.
Hal
PS: I think its item No1. You should post the model and type numbers.

Hal, I may be wrong, but I don't think Deere ever used a K321 with an armature. I think they always used a points system. Even when Kohler went to the Magnum series which had armatures.

I had a JD 140 and it had an automotive type coil
and points. Hal
