I have a 18 hp briggs vtwin and it wont stay charged when running. I dont know whats wrong. I'll put the battery charger on it and its got a good charge. I'll put the battery charger on it for 2 seconds and it'll start up. But when its running, it'll just die and the battery will be dead. So something isnt charging the battery up, like an alternator or generator would. HELP!!

Check battery with a hydrometer, you may have 1 or more weak/bad cells in battery,if battery checks ok with a hydrometer, connect a voltmeter to battery terminals,if alt is working & battery able to hold a charge, voltage should slowly rise to 14-14.5v with eng running at full throttle, what I suspect is happening is anti-backfire sol on carb is dropping out, shutting of gas to main jet in carb, this can be caused by a bad battery, alt not charging or possibly a shorted anti-backfire sol coil, draining battery with excessive current demand, but not enough to blow fuse in control circuit, you could also try disconnecting electric clutch(if you have same on mower)same may have shorted turns, especially if eng dieing with deck engaged. You might try going to briggs web site with eng mod & type #s and download an eng manual, they usually show on eng wiring.

You need to get a wiring diagram for your tractor
so you troubleshoot the problem. You may have an alternator or a stator in the fywheel with diodes in the regulator to convert the ac voltage to dc.
If you can find the regulator and use your volt meter to check for ac voltage to the regulator. If there's voltage there your stator is probably ok. Briggs & Stratton may be able to furnish you
with a wiring diagram. Call 1-866-436-7387 on Monday and ask them for a copy. You will need the engine model number and type number. Hal

Make sure all your terminals are clean and tight on your battery and starter.
