I have a 16hp 38" Poulan Pro riding mower that won't go into gear. I can hear the shifter moving something near the gear box, so I don't think it's a snapped cable.

Any ideas?

You need to contact poulan with your unit numbers there was a recall on some of these units and the problem was shifter related. Other wise--if this is an in-line shift unit you may find the adjustment of linkage out. Put unit in nuetral un hook linkage from transaxle and see if this can be adjusted to make sure unit is actually going into reverse. If not you may have problems with transaxle--possibly keys are damaged. But first contact poulan about recall.
