I just purchased a John Deere 318. I want to change the Hydrastat fluid. I use Dextron III in my 140 and 400 Garden tractors. This one has a dark oil like fluid and is not red like the Dextron III Transmission fluid. Is it ok to completely drain what is in there now and go to the Dextron III or stay with what ever is in there now? Please, I would like to hear any and all suggestions. Thanks, Jack

Acting on recommendations from this board from a couple years ago. I am using Type F (for Ford automatics) in my 140 and 316 tractor hydrostats. I understand the the dexron III is qualified for both Ford and GM automatics. I don't even know if you can get type F fluid now, but I wouldn't mix it with dexron III as I've never heard if you can. John Deere oil is the best, but twice or more the price.

Jack - John Deere recommends Low Viscosity HyGard in their hydrostatic transmissions. In the 318, you can use either Type F or HyGard, just don"t mix them. OK to drain, pull the filter and replace, and switch, just don"t mix.

Dexron III? I would not put that in my 318. If those other tractors were mine, I"d get them switched over to HyGard as well. - Dave

when 318 tractors came out they had type f trans fluid in them
Later on deere came out with low viscosity hygard oil
It replaces type f fluid
Mixing wasnt recomended it was drain and refill with filter change no flush was required
Deere does have a Bio hygard oil which is not recomended so dont mix it up with regular hygard oils when purchasing Regular Hygard oil can be used instead of Low Vis Hygard
If your machine has a lot of hours on it would be better
