i have a small self propelled snapper push mower with a 3.5 b&s engine on it. just found out that the gas tank is busted. this is one that surrounds the top of engine, and just has the fuel line that hooks to carb. the carb is not mounted on the tank. it is a plastic tank, and am having trouble finding one. can anyone help? JB Weld possibly?

That almost sounds like what we have on our junk Lawn boy w/ a 5.5 ( I think) h.p. engine. It's a B&S "Quantum" series. I can take a picture if you want and I would be willing to sell it if you think it'll work.

TO JT:

The model number on the motor is 90702, the type is 3080 01, and the code is 89040504. it is a vertical shaft 3.5hp b&s engine. the carb mounts directly to the block, and hooks to the fuel tank with gas line. this whole assembly mounts around the crankrope tower, and it has a hole in it for the dipstick. hope this helps

The part number on the tank you need is 490622 if your tank is black, and 491045 if your tank is a fawn color. The price is 51.95 for the 490622 and 42.65 for the 491045

TO JT:

I will get the engine numbers for you this after noon and post them. This is just a regular 3.5 hp b&s engine, and the tank mounts around the top of the crankrope housing with screws. it has a circle cutout for the dipstick tube to come through, and a fuel shut-off on the bottom with about a 4 inch piece of fuel line to carb. this complete asembly is gas tank. looks pretty standard to me, i dont see why it would be unique to snapper. was told by repair shop, that due to the minor crack, i could just use some type of plastic weld adhesive to fix it. What would you suggest?

Have you tried a B&S dealer?

was told by local dealer that this type of tank was unique to snapper mowers. checked with local supplier, and was told that one was not listed on computer as able to purchase. am hoping someone out there may have one. this little mower is an 84 model and was kept in garage all its life. original paint and bagger in excellent condition, motor and drive is perfect, it is just that where the two halves of tank are sealed, joint has seperated. was thinking of some type of weld for plastic, such as JB. any ideas? also thanks for the very quick reply!

Mower junkyard? in reply to bdunegan, 05-18-2006 06:35:46
The tank that's "unique to a Snapper" might be due to a "unique" engine cover or might be that dealer's imagination. At the very worst, you could take the tank and engine cover off most any B&S lawn mower engine and use tubing to hook the tank to the carb.

I'd hesitate to glue that tank back together because failure could be pretty exciting. Think explosion or grass fire.
