I went to sears website to see diagrams of my craftsman parts, because the teeth of the piece on the starter are worn away, and I can't find info on it, like what in the world is it called? is it a gear? it's the piece that links into the same type of piece only bigger on the engine to turn it.i know this is probably a stupid question, or i seem stupid cause i don't know the part's name, but i can't find a replacement part until i know what it's called.

If you are referring to the gear on the end of the starter--it is called the Bendix gear, or starter gear. It comes in a kit, which consiste of the gear, a fine wire coil spring, a tower affair, with slots in the sides, a hat-shaped plug, a steel thingy, a hardened steel pin,and some very unclear instructions. I paid a bit more than $7 today, at the mower shop. If you can't handle replacing the gear and other parts, don't feel bad--i had to go back to ask them what the heck had been changed, as the parts i bought didn't look like the old ones! they clued me in and all is well now! Take it to a mower shop and get them to replace the parts.

Thank you very much...that is exactly the part I was referring to. I will take your advice and take it to a shop. Thanks again.
