have an 18hp opposed twin that will not start without squirting a little gas in cylinders. when started, runs like a top. have replaced fuel pump twice (both new ones) replaced vacuum line to block, replaced all fuel line. (tank sits higher than engine, originally gravity feed engine), new fuel cap, have tried blowing air into tank to force feed. can take fuel line off at pump, and gas is there, factory rebuilt carb. will not start unless prime cylinders first. runs fine after that, and will restart unless sets for a while, then back to square one. new coil and plugs, plenty of spark. anyone ever had this problem? any ideas?

Chokes not closing all the way. Readjust you choke control wire at the carb.

You may want to install a primer line that will squirt that gas directly into the intake. Snowblowers use this feature and I have it on a leaf blower. Hal

Sounds like the choke is not working or out of adjustment.

thanks for the replies. the choke is closing all the way shut. this is the first thing i tried. the carb bowl is getting gas to it, just not pulling into cylinders to ignite. it is a factory rebuilt carb with all new parts. plenty of vacuum to fuel pump, and pump is pumping fuel. just not letting it into cylinders. any more thoughts?

run a compression check on your engine! Low compression means either bad valves or valve adjustment, bad rings, worn out engine, or some other cause! Low compression/worn rings, could cause the engine not to draw fuel!
