I just replaced the flywheel on my briggs , fired the mower up ( without the dipstick in oil all over , ) shut the motor off saw smoke (I assume from the oil spewing) , went to restart and the starter ring gear broke , replaced ring gear now the motor spins but won't start , cleaned the carb, did not adjust the carbs , changed sparkplug engine spins and gives a poofing sound but does not start , there is a small spark and gas is getting onto the plug but will not ignite any ideas ?

The flywheel key is a small aluminum piece, rectangular in shape, with rounded ends, which goes in a slot in the top end of the crankshaft, and matches a similar slot in the flywheel. If there was any hard shock to the flywheel, or maybe a backfire, or a loose flywheel nut, it could have sheared the aluminum key! If you do find it sheared, and if you do take it apart to replace it, make sure you tighten the flywheel nut very tight! There is what looks like a flat washer under the flywheel nut, but it ain't flat! Look carefully at it, and you will see that the washer is slightly domed. the high side of the domed washer must contact the nut. This takes the place of a lock washer! Although some of the much older engines did have lock washers!
