Does anyone have any experience with the Scotts brand of lawn tractors. I understand that they were build by JD for Scotts. I am looking at a used one. It is 25 hp, 50" cut and has hydrostatic drive. Just wondering if they hold up as well as a JD if taken care of? Thanks for any info anyone has.

Thank you so much for the additional information. I will definately check the tag and look for the manufacturer. I am very glad that I stumbled onto this site prior to making any purchase of a mower.

The Scots mowers built by John Deere are the build here in Greeneville, TN. They are the same quality, and in essence the same mowers, as the John Deeres you now see being sold at Home Depot and Lowe's garden centers. They're good mowers and should give you years of service if properly maintained. They are not the same quality (metal thickness, etc.) as the Deeres sold at the Deere dealers, but they're cheaper. As mentioned earlier, make certain that they have the reference to John Deere on the data tag.

Check the serial number tag for "built by John Deere"
If it's really a 50 inch deck it was not a Deere but a Murry or MTD built for Scotts MFG. A Deere/scotts that size would be a 46, 48, or 54" deck

I want to thank you both for the time that you both took to answer my post. It is very helpful knowing about your experiences and that of your friend in making a decision. I may go tomorrow and see if the owner and I can come to terms on a price.

God Bless,
Richard

My buddy has a 2554.In three years the only problem was with the rear end. It was a $175.00 fix at a John Deere dealer. He is real happy with the mower over all.
