Have a MTD lawn tractor with Briggs 18hp 2cyl engine. It has a new carb kit, but still surges when not running at full throttle. It almost dies then picks up and then slows down again. It is like a governor problem, but no adjustment helps. Anyone have any ideas? The grass is growing fast in the PNW!!

Bob, you said it surges when NOT at full throttle? Does it surge when you engage the deck and use it? Does the choke make a difference? Plastic intake manifold or aluminum? How many hours on the machine?

Lean mixture somehow I would bet. Check the intake manifold for leaks. Some of those B&S twins had a cast two-piece intake that can develop leaks. Take a can of WD-40 and spray along all the joints. If it smooths out at one spot you have found it. Since you have had the carb off I would be looking for a leak in that area. WD-40 should also help there.

Have you tried giving some choke while it"s surging? This will tell you right away that it"s a lean condition if it smooths out. There is a possibility that the carb kit had a damaged gasket someplace or you may have a clogged orifice. Some of these things can drive you nuts after a while but keep after it and you will get it.

Bob,
Even though you have a "new carb kit", you still have a fuel starvation problem. What is happening to make it surge is it runs, starts to run out of gas, dies, but before it dies, it gets more fuel, then starts the same thing, cycle after cycle. Did you take off the carb?? You need to take it off, taek carb spray, compressed air and some tag wire and clean every little orfice in the carb. If it is doing it only at less than full throttle, you have the idle circuit partially plugged up. blow it out with carb cleaner and compressed air. Then you might put some Sea Foam in the gas and let it run. Someone suggested B12, I have tried that, have not been impressed, keep going back to Sea Foam, have great luck with that stuff. If you can find Deep Creep, that will work better than carb cleaner, it is Sea Foam in a spray can.

Every time I have seen this it is caused by a lean mixture. Try some Chemtrol B12 in the gas. Look for air leaks between the carb and block inlet. Adjust the carb for slightly richer mixture.
