i have a late 80s early 90s model craftsman garden tractor with a briggs 18hp i/c gold. It was rebuilt this past winter and when i tried to crank it it would fire but not crank, it will run if you hold a gassy rag over it but then cuts off, i filled the tank up with gas and jaked it up to where the tank was above the carb, i have replaced the old carb with one that ran about 2 months ago, but still dont run, fuel is getting to the fuel pump and there was a carb kit installed when the engine was rebuilt after we figured out that it wouldn't run, any ideas whats wrong?

Make sure the fuel and vacuum pulse line are on the right ports. If they are switched the fuel pump will not work.

ben is that carb the type that has the fuel pump built on the side of it .sounds like its not getting fuel to the carb if ure holdin a rag over the top of it.if you look on the carb itself in the front of it theres a five eights bolt screwed into it .take that bolt out and look in there and it should be a allen head lookin screw in there.actually thats the venturi .unscrew it out and try cleaning those real fine holes or ports in it .i use a welder torch tip cleaner .just make sure there all cleared out then gently screw it back in and snug it up then put the screw back in there.u may also look to make sure the choke butterfly is fully chokin when u try to start it.but if thats dosent work the diaphragm in the fuel pump may have a pin hole in causing it not to pump the gas up there.try that and good luck.don

Make sure the solenoid on the bottom of the carb is working correctly, or isnt shutting off when it isnt supposed to, so fuel can get into the carb. It shuts off the flow of fuel when you turn the key to "off", to prevent a back-fire!
