baler46,

Does your engine run ok at idle but as you increase it's speed it starts missing and running poorly? If so, you have a bad coil. Every one of the B&S Model 9 thru 23's that I have and collect have this problem. This is B&S's Magnematic ignition. The coil, P/N 290880, from B&S is over $100.00. You can find them "Made in China" for $30.00. If you can get you hands on a November 2005 issue of Gas Engine Magazine you will find an artical on my coil modification for these engines using a later B&S coil. You can find these coils on old push mower engine and with a little labor you can fix you engine for little cost.

That is one of those good old long stroke engines with a lot of torque and low rpms. I think gene's pretty close on ont the speed. I'd fix it, too.

I assume you are runing current engine at full throttle ? If not then max. speed doesn't matter much as you can vary it with the replacement. This ,of course, only applies if yours doesn't have a gear reduction unit on it - that creates a whole new view on things.

Could find nothing specific in my B&S manuals. Generally top speed- no load - range is 3600 to 4000 RPM.

I think that with a little math you can figure out how many engine RPMs you want/need if you know how many RPMs you want the auger to turn.
