Greetings: My lawn tractor (John Deere 180) has decided to do only light work. It starts cold, then I am able to light work. If I try to turn on the lawn mower, tow a trailer etc... it back fires and then stalls. I then have to leave it sit for a few hours before it will start again. The engine turns over fine, it is getting gas. However it doesn't look like it is getting power to the spark plug. I disconnected the plug and tried the ground trick and it doesn't spark

Thank you

Bernie

I worked on a 185 John Deere just the other day with the same symtoms.Other than it would not die it would lose power.Quite strange as it usually dies when an igniter is faulty, but i replaced it just afterwords and sure enough it cured the problem. Its handy for me as i have an igniter i use as a tool to check it.They give a fair amount of trouble on those engines.

JTB: Thank you very much. Went to the local John Deere dealer tonight an ordered an igniter.

Talked to a mechanic there and he told me that it is most likely the igniter and or coil.

Should get the igniter next tuesday

Will let you know

Cheers

Bernie

What engine? Sound like you need a new coil.
