I have an old Wheel Horse 702 with a transmission problem. It was given to me by my mother-in-law after the father-in-law passed away several years ago. Any gear I put it in it appears to lock up and not move. It will roll freely in neutral but locks up in any gear. Will the transaxle have to come apart? Thanks for any direction. Bruce,
Let's make sure you are not going into two gears at one time. One of the problems with the Unidrive Wheel Horse transmission that after about 35 years worth of use the ball on the end of the shift lever gets worn out and will let the ball slip past the shift blocks get the transmission into two gears at one time.
First remoeve the shift boot to uncover the a set screw with a 7/16 hex jam nut , loosen the jam nut and use a 1/8 Allen wrench to remove the set screw. Now remove the shifter and look in the hole with a light to see if the shift blocks are in alinement. The shift block should form a square for the gear shift lever ball when in nuetral. Also take a look at the end of the gear shift lever to see how badly the ball is worn. To put the blocks into nuetral just use a long screwdriver and pry against the blocks.
If the blocks are moving OK and the lever is not worn the tranmission may have a stuck bearing (from sitting or getting water in the transmission) so drain the oil from the transmission case by removing the 1/4 Allen pipe plug at the left rear bottom (also check for metal in the oil too) , then refill the transmission with a 50/50 mixture of 30 weight oil and diesel fuel (kerosine , WD-40 or automatic transmission fluid will also work) and let the tractor sit for a few days. Then push the tractor around the yard and let it sit some more , once you get the transmission freed up drive it for a about 15 mintues and then drain out the 50/50 mixture are refill with 1-1/2 quarts of 85-140 weight oil.
Let me know if you still have problems.

Thanks for the info Bill. I'll take a peak and see what those forks looks like... I just didn't know where to start. I don't think it has a stuck bearing due to water as it was always in a garage to my knowledge. It runs great, has a mower deck on it and the belt driven hydraulic lift system. Thanks again. Bruce
