I have a Scott's 20hp kohler 48 inch cut made by John Deere. The reservoir for the hydrostatic tranny is empty and I don't have a service or owners manual. What type of fluid do I service it with.

I don't mean to sound questioning however... engine oil into a hydrostatic transmission??? Why not use what John Deere uses in their hydro trannys? Yes, it is pricier. Obviously you intend to keep this tractor for some time. Also, a good transmission oil that meets/exceeds manufacturers reccomendations would work. If you have access to a local Tractor Supply or farm store check into their best transmission/hydraulic fluid. I really shy away from using engine oil in a hydrostatic transmission.... I like to keep my hydros for years. p.s. (I work at a company that makes hydro equipment.)
