What are the size, and type of belts for the mower deck & pto, for an "original" (1961) Cub Cadet?

R. Bedell is correct about the 70 Cub Cadet. Okay now a little info about the so-called Original Cub Cadet and how it has become known as such. Technically speaking IH did not have a specific model number such as 70, 100, 125, etc. for the first model of Cub Cadet. It was simply called International Cub Cadet. Some Cub Cadet dealer won't understand if you ask for parts to an "Original" Cub Cadet. It is best to take in your tractor serial number and any other info if your deck is not the timed belt deck that was first supplied by IH for these tractors. Later the decks for the 70/100 models could be mounted on the International tractor providing the PTO attachment was added to the tractor so the mower could be engaged/disengaged via this pulley instead of the deck mounted method on the timed deck. The phrase "Original" came about when some collectors tried to narrow down this particular model when speaking of Cub Cadet tractors. Hope this helps. :+)

I assume you are talking about a 70 Cub Cadet since you said original. To my knowledge all Cadets made before 1970 where 3/8" drive belts which made them difficult to find. Don't have my book handy but want to say the part number is IH-490489-R2. This was the most common belt for the Cub Cadets of that time. I have been able to get away with running 1/2" belts on some tractors but the others just throw them off. Would only recommend running a 1/2" belt in a pinch since the 3/8 belts are only available through Cub Cadet dealer. Good luck!

The Cub Cadet 70 wasn't introduced until Aug of 1963. So, in 1961, the only model available was the "Original".

The Part number and belt specification that I posted eariler, came from a Cub Cadet Service Manual and is correct for the Orginal with a rectangular deck.

The only thing that is open, is the size and type of deck. As I stated, I assume the deck he has was the orginal 38" rectangular deck that came with the "Original" model.

It is "assumed" that your inquiry is in reference to the 38" rectangular shaped deck with the "timed or cog" spindle belt.

The Belt from the PTO to the deck is Part Number #954-0226 which is a 1/2" x 82" belt.
