My Dad (83 yrs old) has a Craftsman 10 HP tractor purchased in 1970 that has run every day since, until it recently died. Local repair shop says the magneto is shot. It is in mint condition and I have been unable to locate a replacement magneto. Tractor model # is 143.609032 and the magneto part # is 610759. Any suggestions or help would be appreciated. Local mag shops in the Chicago area haven"t shown any interest - clain it can"t be rebuilt and too costly to make a new one.

I also have a dead magneto on a 1970 Sears 10 HP tractor, identical to the gentleman from Chicago recently posted. Looking for a supplier.

Fred,
You are going to have to do a little hunting on that one, Tecumseh discontinued that part in 1998. I have been looking for one for over a year and have not had any luck. I am sure you might find one, but it will be difficult.
Jim

The numbers you gave should be the numbers off the engine. If it is a 10 hp, should be a model HH-100 tecumseh. The tractor model should be on a plate by the shifter. 1st 3 numbers of model being 917. Have you tried a tecumseh dealer?

you need to find a shop that wants your business, my neighbor has good reliable j/d that needed a part, dealer who sold it to him spent most of the visit trying to sell him a new mower, we went elsewhere

you very likely have either a briggs or tecumseh motor on there, get model/serial munber off the shroud and start haunting the briggs/tecumseh dealers

if its tecumseh, the magneto coil has a heavy wire clip holding it in place, it slides off and you slde a new coil on, swap one off an old working motor to test it, not so sure about briggs

It's probably a Tecumseh engine, post numbers off of the engine to be sure, and someone will be able to tell you what it is.

The best place I know for Tecumseh help (or other small engine help, got that mattter), is the Forum at PERR.COM.

People over there know of sources for ignition parts for those old machines, too.
