Can anyone tell me what might be wrong with my tiller? It won"t backup it just grinds the gears when you try to put it in reverse. Someone just gave me this machine and I don"t have a manual or anything. Is there some type of adjustment and if there is what do I do? Can a manual be gotten for this machine. I am not sure what the model is but it has a aluminum block Honda with electric start. The serial number is 321403 and it is a 7 HP honda Troy built tiller.

Barnyard,
If it grinds when you put it in reverse, you have a reverse disc that is worn out and needs to be replaced. When you put a Troybilt horse tiller in reverse, you are lowering the engine, it has a disc on crankshaft that rubs against the input pully on the transmission and turns it backward. You can also go to www.mtdproducts.com, and there is a parts lookup there and you can find what I am taliking about, you will need a model and seriel number to get the info, though.

Thanks for your reply. I went to the MTD website and found the reverser disk.

Barnyard4020: Don't know anything about your machine specifically, but on the older Troy-bilts, you would pull up on the main gearshift handle to put the machine in reverse. At the bottom of this handle is a small block with detents in it to keep the machine in the selected gear. As they came from the factory, reverse was set up to NOT slip into the detent so you would not lock the machine in reverse and drive over yourself. This block can get out of adjustment, causing the machine to not go into reverse. If I recall, it's held on by a bolt and can be adjusted up and down. Also, the older tillers were known for bending the main gearshift lever, particularly from pressing the lever up to keep the machine in reverse. Many older tillers have been braced, gusseted, welded, strengthened, etc. in this area to alleviate this problem. If the lever is bent up too far, the lever will hit the handle crossbar and the machine will not go into reverse. You might want to check this as well.

Is it a Honda tiller or a Troy-bilt, I believe MTD now owns Troy-bilt and probably uses American motors on the tillers. Honda builds a tiller very similar to a Troy-bilt, If it grinds there is probably a gear tore up in the transmission. Jerrie
